I read it because George Saunders said it was one of his favorite books. It was a social satire that reminded me of Catch-22. The blatant antisemitic remarks throughout were disturbing, and I suppose reflect the Russian culture of the time period.

I liked it. A fast read. Intelligent, complex protagonist. A story covering the good and bad of life and a network of relationships that tied up nicely.
