It began as the story of a talented young musician hiding in a Northwest seaside village from a dangerous past. Having recognized my own propensity toward fearing the unknown, I wanted to write about a woman learning to face her fears by trusting those who loved her. As the layers of the story developed, I ended up weaving in the grief of infertility and the evils of human trafficking. These sprang up as part of the creative process but were not part of my original inspiration. This is one of the marvelous things about writing a novel -- when I start, I have only a slight idea about how it will end. The conclusion is always richer than I could have imagined from the beginning. (less)

When words don't come, it's my subconscious signaling me that I don't know my story well enough. I could be stalled by a plot angle, character, setting, or even the tone. So I invest in additional research or brainstorming until I get unstuck. (less)
