It began as the story of a talented young musician hiding in a Northwest seaside village from a dangerous past. Having recognized my own propensity toward fearing the unknown, I wanted to write about a woman learning to face her fears by trusting those who loved her. This is one of the marvelous things about writing a novel -- when I start, I have only a slight idea about how it will end. The conclusion is always richer than I could have imagined from the beginning. (less)
