While Anthony Cleveland's southern ancestral roots run deep into the American colonial past of the British Empire, his childhood and adolescent years were spent in Michigan. His family, like thousands of other southerners following the end of WWII, relocated to the industrial Midwest seeking improved economic opportunities.
Anthony graduated from Bedford Senior high school and enrolled at Adrian College where he studied Chemistry. Between his sophomore and junior years, he married Cheryl, his high school sweetheart and transferred to the University of Toledo where he completed his undergraduate education with a B.S. in Chemistry and minor in Mathematics.
Anthony spent the next 25 years of his life working in the private sector holding posit

Roots of Faith - Spiritual Reflections

This will serve as the last and final blog entry regarding my historical fiction novel, Roots of Faith. Life is an interesting journey full of surprises and unexpected developments. You would not have been able to convince me that at some point in my life I would write and have published a book of this nature. But it did happen and it has been quite an experience. As I bring this chapter of my lif Read more of this blog post »

“Ann Whitby had a secret and this was a secret no one outside the immediate family could ever know.”
Anthony Jay Cleveland, Roots of Faith

“But she always sweetly and tenderly called him Mungo for it was Mungo and his words of truth that had finally set her free.”
Anthony Jay Cleveland, Roots of Faith

“He would smile at her and welcome her home.”
Anthony Jay Cleveland, Roots of Faith

“The conclusion of intelligent design flows naturally from the data itself—not from sacred books or sectarian beliefs. Inferring that biochemical systems were designed by an intelligent agent is a humdrum process that requires no new principles of logic or science. It comes simply from the hard work that biochemistry has done over the past forty years, combined with consideration of the way in which we reach conclusions of design every day.”
Michael J. Behe, Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution

“Americans see history as a straight line and themselves standing at the cutting edge as representatives for all mankind.”
Frances FitzGerald

“Every major feature of the modern United States—from racial equality to Social Security, from the Pentagon to the suburb—represents a repudiation of Jeffersonianism.”
Bernard Bailyn, Sometimes an Art: Nine Essays on History

“For the primary goal of the American Revolution which transferred American life and introduced a new era in human history, was not the overthrow or even the alteration of the existing social order but the preservation of political liberty threatened by the apparent corruption of the constitution, and the establishment in principle of the existing conditions of liberty.”
Bernard Bailyn, The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which,if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”
C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory
