Civil War Era NEW BEDFORD WHALING SHIP - The Lady Grey
FREEDOM CALLING: A Civil War Slave Escapes By Sea
Book by Dana Vacca
BOOK HIGHLIGHTS - Lady Grey (Ship)
The beautiful sailing barque, Lady Grey, underway with nearly full sail, her hull cuts gracefully through the water toward New Bedford.
Like many whaling and merchant ships of her day, she had "painted on" gun ports (only two were real), so that, from a distance, she had the look of a "ship of the line" and would be thought to be carrying a row of cannon along her larboard and starboard sides. However, this did not insure safety as a privateer captain worth his salt had every ship he had ever seen etched into his memory,... by the line of her hull, the configuration of her masts and sails, - and most often knew which battlements were feigned and which were real!

Freedom Calling - The LADY GREY based on the Real-Life Ship, TRUELOVE
A Real Ship and A Real Live Sea Captain!
The ship and the captain in FREEDOM CALLING were inspired by a real ship, the TRUELOVE, & her captain, John Parker. I thought they should be immortalized!
The Truelove was in service for 130 yrs! - the longest of any other wooden hull ship. She was built in 1764 in Philadelphia and was used by America to fight the British during the American Revolution. She was captured by the British, taken to England, and sold as spoils of war. She became a whaling vessel!
Her design was "tumbling home" style, which meant her sides curved up and inward which made her especially seaworthy. She sailed to the Artic on whaling sojourns under Captain Parker, and because of her design, she never got stuck in the ice like so many other vessels. When the ice began freezing around her, because of her hull-shape, the ice just pushed her up, instead of crushing her (many ship that sailed the Arctic were stove in and broken apart by the ice, like the disaster in 1871 when thirty-three ships were lost,... but that's another story, I'll save for later!). As the ice melted Truelove had the habit of being able to set herself gently back down into the sea!
**********
Book Excerpt: "She was a beautiful ship, the way her bow cut the sea-the feel of her deck under your feet with the sea moving beneath her; the way her rigging sang in the wind; how she would shrug a rough sea off her beam. Some ships have a soul, and to be aboard one like that is to know majesty."
NOTES:
AH! The romance of the sea,.... and the free spirits of brave, intrepid sea captains,.... I LOVE IT! Hope you find this as fascinating as I did! (see links below).

Freedom Calling - Captain's Cabin Aboard Ship - The Lady Grey
ABOARD THE SHIP - CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS
Book Excerpts
"The captain went into his cabin to the nook lined with rolls of nautical charts. Bent over the large map spread out on the map table, he traced our plotted route and pointed to our present location...."
Check out this typical New England ship interior
http://penobscotmarinemuseum.org/pbho...
It is a typical interior of a New England barque. The design and furnishings of Freedom Calling's whale ship, the LADY GREY, would have been very much like this.
The captain's cabin was located in the aft-most section of the ship. A bank of large, paned windows lined the stern-side gallery that, by day, bathed the cabin in rays of bright, sunny light and silvery moonlight by night.
How amazing it would be,... to be seated at the chart table with the beautiful panorama of azure blue sky and cobalt sea receding behind you!

Freedom Calling - The Captain's Domain, The Quarterdeck - The Lady Grey
The Captain's Domain - The Quarterdeck
Book Excerpt
"For a short time each morning and evening, the captain walked the starboard stretch of the sternmost upper deck that was his private retreat. Most of his time, though, was spent on the quarterdeck, just behind the main mast of the ship. That was his domain, his throne, where he reigned supreme. There, he knew the real meaning of freedom that most landsmen can only imagine."
The quarterdeck of a ship is the area of the ship immediately behind the enormous, trunk-like main mast and is the location of the helm, the huge ship's wheels that control the massive rudder that steers the ship.
The quarterdeck is almost a "sacred" space. Only men on duty are understood to be present there, and it is not a place for casual conversation, loitering or horse-play. It is a place governed by strict adherence to protocol that has been ordained for centuries; a always to be a place of absolute order and smartly conduct.

Freedom Calling - Is Your Dog Loyal? - Dogs of the Civil War
Is Your Dog Loyal?
I'll bet he or she would follow you anywhere, right?
I thought so! Mine, too. He's my best friend, best buddy; knows what I'm thinking before I even think it!
That isn't just the case with our dogs, but dogs in the 19th century were like that, too! In fact, a lot of them followed their owners right into battle without a second thought! There was Harvey from Ohio, and Major from Maine, and Sallie from Pennsylvania. There were so many dogs in the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry that it was known as the Barking Dog Regiment! And you probably knew General Lee's horse was named Traveler, but did you know President Jefferson Davis' dog was also named Traveler?
Check out the dogs that fought alongside their owners in the Civil War!
