The Edge Of Freedom by Dana Vacca

A Civil War slave with a will to be free, a New Bedford sea captain, a Native American, Lakota Sioux, in a powerful, moving and spiritual journey. The saga of Freedom Calling Series.

Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia has just surrendered. Less than a week later, President Lincoln has been assassinated.

While America is struggling to heal from its fresh wounds, two emancipated slaves, Daisy and Celia, begin a dangerous journey north to New Bedford. With their Native American friend, Enapay, as a guide, they venture from the protection of Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp.

Celia is fighting to return home to her sea-faring husband, whaling master, Eben MacGregor and, after a long separation, she is hoping to regain the life she had left behind. Daisy is stepping into an unfamiliar world and newfound freedom. They are both optimistic but fearful of the unknown that lies ahead.

Roaming the countryside are bitter Confederates, including slave patrols, the Gray Ghost, John Mosby, and other rebels who, though defeated, have not given up the fight. They are not all that spell danger for the three travelers, and the obstacles they must overcome are not all found south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Over land, by wagon, and aboard a sailing ship at sea, history comes to life in this exciting historical novel full of action, adventure, and romance.

The lives of Captain MacGregor, Celia, Daisy and Enapay are touchstones to humanity and re-define the meaning of freedom and liberty for all. Their journey becomes one, not only of miles, but of enlightenment.

Their saga is a page-turner filled with authentic, accurate history that is wound with violent loss and strong bonds of love that plumb the depths of heart and soul.

A sailing ship, a sea captain, a whale, a journey from 1865 Virginia to New Bedford make this story of love, struggle and rebirth, an exciting adventure.

The Shipwreck That Led Confederate Veterans To Risk All For Union Lives

The Sultana was on its way from Vicksburg, Miss., to St. Louis when the explosion occurred, says Jerry Potter, a Memphis lawyer and author of The Sultana Tragedy. It was just weeks after the Civil War ended, Potter explains, and the vessel was packed with Union soldiers who'd been released from Confederate prison camps.

Civil War Era Washington, DC, the most vulnerable city in the Union

With Washington, DC, the White House and President Lincoln just across the Potomac from the Confederate Army, the Federals had to be ever vigilant and the approach to the capitol was well-defended.

Here, in this original photograph, a gun crew of Union soldiers from the 4th New York Heavy Artillery load a 24-pounder M.1845 Seacoast Gun at Fort Corcoran in Alexandria, Va. The cannoneer on the left holds a hollow explosive-shell. On the ground to the right are a grapeshot and canister-shell. (Library of Congress)

Freedom Calling - Is Your Dog Loyal? - Dogs of the Civil War

Is Your Dog Loyal?
I'll bet he or she would follow you anywhere, right?
I thought so! Mine, too. He's my best friend, best buddy; knows what I'm thinking before I even think it!

That isn't just the case with our dogs, but dogs in the 19th century were like that, too! In fact, a lot of them followed their owners right into battle without a second thought! There was Harvey from Ohio, and Major from Maine, and Sallie from Pennsylvania. There were so many dogs in the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry that it was known as the Barking Dog Regiment! And you probably knew General Lee's horse was named Traveler, but did you know President Jefferson Davis' dog was also named Traveler?

Check out the dogs that fought alongside their owners in the Civil War!

Freedom Calling - The Captain's Domain, The Quarterdeck - The Lady Grey

The Captain's Domain - The Quarterdeck

Book Excerpt
"For a short time each morning and evening, the captain walked the starboard stretch of the sternmost upper deck that was his private retreat. Most of his time, though, was spent on the quarterdeck, just behind the main mast of the ship. That was his domain, his throne, where he reigned supreme. There, he knew the real meaning of freedom that most landsmen can only imagine."

The quarterdeck of a ship is the area of the ship immediately behind the enormous, trunk-like main mast and is the location of the helm, the huge ship's wheels that control the massive rudder that steers the ship.
The quarterdeck is almost a "sacred" space. Only men on duty are understood to be present there, and it is not a place for casual conversation, loitering or horse-play. It is a place governed by strict adherence to protocol that has been ordained for centuries; a always to be a place of absolute order and smartly conduct.
