Being a first-time author
I've spent 50 years working as a journalist - in newspapers, radio and TV news.
But I've never written a book before.
So it's been a hugely exciting challenge putting my career in perspective and remembering some of the extraordinary stories I've covered over a half a century.
I'm not sure I would have ventured out on an autobiography unless a publisher friend promised to print my book if I promised to write it. He believed I had many great tales to tell and insisted that readers around the world would love to read about them.
So I set out to tell my story from a callow teenage apprentice reporter on a local newspaper through local radio, regional television to becoming a TV foreign correspondent and eventually a network news anchorman.
Along the way I covered all manner of stories, many of which made headlines around the world, like the assassination of Indira Gandhi; Nelson Mandela's long walk to freedom from prisoner to president; wars in the Middle East, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Yugoslavia;
9/11 and two decades of terror; the Indian Ocean Tsunami; genocide in Rwanda; crime stories from the Yorkshire Ripper to OJ Simpson; and plenty of sport from Olympic Games to World Cups.
I hope I've captured some of the excitement of covering
big stories and how I felt along the way.
If readers like this book, I might even start thinking about a second!
