In his youth the author was a surrealist painter (acquainted with Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp); a theatrical costume dresser for Cliff Richard, Jimmy Jewel and Ken Dodd; a BBC Scenic Artist, Set & Costume Designer and actor in theatre and film, a stuntman and singer, world-traveller, zoo-keeper, art teacher, deckhand, street portraitist and many other weird and wonderful occupations during seven years of hitchhiking halfway round the world. As the founder of Gandalf’s Garden community and Magazine, he was considered a British spiritual cult hero in the Sixties.

He is a practised storyteller and resembles a cross between Gandalf and Dumbledore, as you will see in the book trailer video (which is greatly appealing to children).

It's a chapter book about the adventures of the animals of the wood and meadow, which first charmed me when I was six years old. It is suitable for ages 5-10.
You will meet Old Mother West Wind and her children the Merry Little Breezes, Grandfather Frog, Johnny Chuck the Groundhog, Billy Brock the Badger, Sly Reddy Fox, Sneezle the Weasel, Jimmy Skunk, Pee-Tee Rabbit the prankster, and a host of other memorable characters from a world gone by. The book is completely rewritten in a lyrical style and will contain 22 completely new illustrations by yours truly. It's a Bedtime Story book that begs to be read aloud. (less)

How I Came to Write Ifflepinn Island

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What inspired you to write Ifflepinn Island?

Well, when I was about thirteen I loved reading the charming Moomintroll books by Tove Jansson. And that made me want to create funny little characters like hers. In fact, I had already drawn some amusing creatures I called ‘ifflepinns’ for a parody of Alice in Wonderland I was writing at that age, called Bryon in Bewilderland. Read more of this blog post »

“People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars; and they pass themselves by without wondering.”
