His short works have been published in the Blackwater Review of Northwest Florida State College. In this way, a writer can become familiar with various writing styles, plot/structure techniques, and possibly trigger new ideas by absorbing other’s words. These are all steps a writer follows when finding their “voice.” I would also advise aspiring writers to develop an outline well in advance of beginning those first couple chapters, as most young, and sometimes even experienced, writers become discouraged when they aren’t certain of what happens next. And, of course, never be afraid to share your work with others. Use their criticism to your benefit! Know it takes time, effort, practice, and much patience, but if you treat it like a job instead of a hobby (i.e. setting writing goals and word counts throughout the week), you are already on track to success! BUT there are many missing gaps for me from when my grandpa fought in the Vietnam war. He has a difficult time talking about it, since it was a traumatic experience for him being drafted at the age of eighteen. So there’s a lot of mystery surrounding his time spent in the jungles of Vietnam. (less)

“The river speaks a language, something one isn’t born knowing but has to learn. I learned it from my dad. Some of it is wisdom, some of it skill. Some of it is the quirks and tendencies of a natural beast—the ebb and flow, the up and down, the flood draining down to a trickle. It’s all part of the river’s story, which it’s always willing to tell.”
McCaid Paul, Dead River

“Change is a part of life, son,” says Grandpa. “But
you want to know two things that never change?”
“Death and taxes?” Grandma asks.
“No,” Grandpa says. “Sweet tea and snap peas.”
McCaid Paul, Sweet Tea & Snap Peas

“It’s nearly nightfall, the vast evening sky as resplendent and intricate as that quilt hanging from the wooden knob on the side of Grandma’s dresser. This sky is like the work of a seamstress, sown tangerine-orange, raspberry-pink, and dappled with cream-white clouds for an extra touch, the finished product so lush and vibrant that I could gape at it for hours.”
McCaid Paul, Sweet Tea & Snap Peas

“It’s Sunday—my grandparent’s favorite day of the week. To them, Sundays are good for three things: church, rest, and fried chicken from Piggly Wiggly.”
McCaid Paul, Sweet Tea & Snap Peas

“In the eyes of others, we’re often not who we imagine ourselves to be.”
Gilly Macmillan, What She Knew

“If there's a feeling to home, it's this. A place where there are no secrets, where nothing stays buried; not the past and not yourself. Where you can be all the versions of you, see it all reflected back at you as you walk the same stairs, the same halls, the same rooms. Feel the ghost of your mother as you sit at the kitchen table, hear the words of your father circling round and round after dinner, and your brother stopping by, wishing you'd be a little better, a little stronger.... It's four walls echoing back everything you've ever been and everything you've ever done, and it's the people who stay despite it all. Through it all. For it all.”

Mike Thanks for friend invite, McCaid. I blame Goodreads and the wonderful people that have befriended me, and the ones I follow, for broadening my reading horizons and helping me discover gems I might have otherwise overlooked. I like the look of the collection on your shelves and see we have similar interests. Happy reading in the meantime.
