Charlie Paterson was born 1966 to a farming family in Southland, New Zealand, being the youngest of 5 children. Although having no formal qualifications Charlie has worked in a variety of roles from being in the NZ Army to stoking coal fired boilers on a tourist steam ship in Queenstown, from managing seacage Salmon Farms at Stewart Island to running a charitable Outdoor Education Centre in Doubtful Sound, Fiordland and owning, operating his own motel. Then as my little solo venture in the rainforest became more challenging with each year passing year, it became a way to vent and express feelings and emotions, (both good and bad). This book tells the experiences of Charlie Paterson who discovered that there were surveyed, legal titles that could be bought in Fiordland National Park, in the abandoned settlement of Jamestown Bay which was originally designed to connect the goldfields of Central Otago to Sydney. If the local body rates were not paid, the sections reverted to the Southland District Council.

“I learnt my first lesson of bureaucracy. “Never be open about your plans with anybody who may oppose you.” Common sense really. Animal cunning is the order of the day, especially when you are a small business mammal avoiding the far larger, carnivorous predator, whether he is a bureaucrat or a big greedy competitor. A good tactician would never consider such an approach. Giving information freely to an adversary was pure stupidity on my part.”
Charlie Paterson, Out of the Wild: Seven Years in the Wilderness

“was left with the distinct feeling that smaller players make easier targets to bully for such petty bureaucrats.”
Charlie Paterson, Out of the Wild: Seven Years in the Wilderness

“As wise, old King Solomon of 4000 years ago said when talking about the actions of men to build themselves up, whether its wealth, power or prestige, “It’s all vanity.” It has a ring of truth about it.”
Charlie Paterson, Out of the Wild: Seven Years in the Wilderness
