It's amazing sometimes that the story is locked inside at all so when it comes out like it's being summoned whole, it's pretty fun. I used to find it so pretentious when writers talked about their characters as if they were real people. But it happens sometimes. Characters get a mind of their own. I recently abandoned a project because the characters were too stubborn. I'd sit in my chair to write and I pictured them staring at me, arms crossed, leaning up against a fence. If I asked them to move or speak, it was like they just stared back at me, slowly shaking their heads, like, "Nope that's not my story." Even that experience, of the whole thing going sideways, is kind of cool. You can't force it, that's for sure. But that's the writing. The best part of being a writer is most definitely being part of a community of writers. Mine is generous, talented, creative, and funny. So many true and dear friends.(less)

Thanks for reading Winter Loon. I'm thrilled you loved it. And yes! I am working on a new novel about three generations of women--sisters, mothers, and daughters-- who must reconcile with the past and the traumas of war before memories are lost to time, before important questions can no longer be asked. Not sure when it will be out in the world but I'm working as hard as I can on it. Hope you and yours are well. Take Courage!

In so many ways, there’s nothing really new here and yet Heart The Lover is delivered with such clean prose, the heartbreak is immediate and searing and feels fresh. Nothing I love more than to have my soul crushed by a novel. “Without time, eternity ...more

“Sometimes it’s easier to build something new than it is to fix something broken.”
Susan Bernhard, Winter Loon

“You need to think of it this way. Each new day is like a new life. More chances to make good and be honorable. That sun goes down, it can take sorrow with it, leave it on the other side if we let it. But you, you hold onto things.”
Susan Bernhard, Winter Loon

“I think about that, about the boy I was and my drowned mother. What did I know, really? Her love for me was deep and frantic. And the desperation of her dying the way she did was keen, sharp like the blade she left behind, like the loon’s black bill. I was not able to put my thoughts together right then, not for years, that the ice had closed in on my mother long before she went out onto Bright Lake.”
Susan Bernhard, Winter Loon

“Some mornings you wake up fully in your body, and you know this is all there is--the air, the shape your body makes in the air, your hand, the skin that covers your hand, the air that covers your skin, the light that fills the air, a few colors in the light, this one thought, this dream dissolving--it is a dream that, in your half-awake state, embarrasses you. You don't tell it to the woman waking up beside you, the woman you love, because it is about another woman, whom you might also love. This is the dream you need to hold onto, this is your shadow speaking, attempting to bewilder you again. Sometimes, if you lay still, you can feel the air entering each cell, sometimes you can feel the blood in your lips. Sometimes, if you lay very still, you can feel the whole web tremble.”
