Hearing it, I get the image of the writer staring at a blank piece of paper or an empty screen, having no idea what to write. I consider myself lucky, that problem really doesn’t happen to me. Because I outline heavily and pre-compose dialogue before starting, I pretty much always have a decent idea of what I’m going to write when I go get working.
I think the problem I do have is more like being ‘stuck in park’. Some days I have a hard time getting going. I know what needs to be done, but the sheer scope of the work I’ve assigned myself for that day causes me to just sit there.
When this happens, I think back to a lesson taught to me by Mary Robinette Kowal. Just write three sentences. Make that all you *have* to do. So, I write three. And then three more, and three more. And then I’m moving and everything’s fine. (less)

I love having an idea that’s too crazy to write, then finding a way to pull it off.
I think my favorite moment as a writer though is to go back when the book is done and think about at one point this whole thing was just a single idea. Just a question in my mind, or a scene, or a character. Now it has become thousands of words, maybe a dozen characters and a whole bunch of cool visuals and locations. All from one little thing. That’s pretty cool. (less)
