Greenwich Village: Today and Yesterday

Eighth Street, ca. 1945, by Berenice Abbott
Seventy years ago, photographer Berenice Abbott and writer Henry Lanier published Greenwich Village: Yesterday and Today, a book that was one part photographic portrait of the neighborhood, one part history, and one part (quasi) walking tour.
Earlier this summer, James headed out with a copy of the book to see how much of Lanier and Abbott's neighborho Read more of this blog post »

“By 1835, Moore had allowed his property to be subdivided, keeping only one parcel—the former orchard—for the General Seminary. In order to lure only the best people to the neighborhood, Moore attached covenants to the deeds specifying what building materials could be used, what structures would be prohibited—including stables—and how long you could keep your property vacant before building on it. In 1820, Moore’s farm had been valued at $17,000; thirty-five years later he had a personal net worth of over half a million dollars. Presumably all of the newfound wealth was thanks to the grid.”
James Nevius, Footprints in New York: Tracing the Lives of Four Centuries of New Yorkers

“The best addition is a bronze map of New Amsterdam. Sculpted by Simon Verity and based on a 1660 city survey, the map brings the old town into sharp relief.”
James Nevius, Footprints in New York: Tracing the Lives of Four Centuries of New Yorkers

“Americans honored Mazzini; the old-guard Protestants erected a politically charged “Spanish Columbus” on the Mall in 1892 as a rebuke to the Italian-Americans; lovers of poetry (including future assassin John Wilkes Booth) honored Shakespeare—the list goes on and on. After Hitler invaded Poland, the statue of Jagiello, which stood proudly in front of the Poland pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair, was orphaned. Eventually, it wended its way to the park too, to serve as a symbol of Polish resistance to Nazism.”
