Something new is coming.

After eight contemporary romance novels, I'm making a deliberate turn — toward history, toward research, toward a story I've been carrying for twenty-five years.

"A Little Book of Prayers" is a novel about Jeanne d'Évreux, the last Capetian queen of France, and the tiny Book of Hours her husband commissioned for her in the 14th century. That book still exists. You can see it at the Met Cloisters in New York.

I wrote my art history graduate thesis on this manuscript. Now I'm writing the novel.

Same pen name. Very different world.

More to come. 🌿

Kate lives near Monterey Bay with her husband and their Labrador, Lucy, who runs the house. When she’s not writing, she’s walking the beach, baking carbs, or deep in a Grateful Dea

Kate McBrien The short answer is to keep writing. You may dump most of it, but sometimes magic happens and a path opens up and leads you in the right direction.

The novel moves between two timelines: Jeanne at the end of her life, making one final decision about that book, and Jeanne as a young queen navigating a court, a complicated marriage, and a world that kept asking more of her than it had any right to.

I've been researching this story for twenty-five years. I wrote my art history graduate thesis on the manuscript.

Now I'm writing the novel. It's the most ambitious thing I've attempted — and the story that needs to be shared.(less)

I've been quiet lately — but not idle.

For the past several months, I've been living in 14th-century France, which is a disorienting place to spend your time. The politics are brutal, the names are impossibly repetitive, and everyone dies too young.

I'm writing "A Little Book of Prayers" — the story of Jeanne d'Évreux, the last Capetian queen of France, and the tiny illuminated manuscript her husband gave her sometime around 1324-1325.
