Sleepless Nights
I've had trouble sleeping at night for as long as I can remember. After reading "Sleep" by Joey Lott, which my sister gave me as a joke, I've turned my schedule upside down. (Hey, since I'm in quarantine, I might as well try to set different patterns!) However, upside down is not always a good thing. You don't have to be elderly to get set in your ways. Rescheduling has included shifting my writing time from night to afternoon. The "Angel of Music" is not a day person!

The First Anniversary
I was thinking recently as I thought over the last year about the first and only release of my second novel, The Pipes Are Calling. While struggling with the publication, reedit, and publishing again of The Untouchable Queen, I was a little unprepared for the cooperation I ended up receiving with this book, particularly regarding the cover. I had an original idea for the cover of two hands cradling a four leaf clover but that didn't really send me. My favorite idea was that of a young man walking into the distance, following the call of freedom, but I figured that was an unrealistic dream because I couldn't think of any guys to pose for the front.
Then came my lifelong neighbor, Ryan!
It was the last week of February, unseasonably warm for New York, and time was running out to publish The Pipes Are Calling in time for St. Patrick's Day, 2018. We drove by our neighbor's house and asked his mom if he would be available that day to go to the Hudson River and pose for my cover. He's a busy guy, but she promised to ask him. A little before five o'clock that night, we get a phone call. "I'm picking Ryan up at the high school and I'll be at your house to pick you up in about seven minutes." Oh my gosh! That's what a friend of mine would call "a poetic ending"!
Several other little things lined up that were unbelievable, including that our "unseasonably good weather" ended in a snow storm the very next day!
So here's to you, Ryan and Mrs. R. Happy St. Patrick's Day and thank you for making last year possible!

Who Will Be The Hero?
After publishing The Pipes Are Calling, I found myself exploring and struggling through a genre quite unlike any I've ever tried before: superheroes. They're a revered, albeit fictitious, people group.
The specific vigilante I chose has been a personal favorite of mine for a few years now and honestly the only one I'm acquainted with. But becoming intimately involved in progressing his story really surfaced the question every author, artist, producer and poet should ask themselves: Who am I making a hero?
It's a vital question in today's culture, all too often ignored in the arts. Audiences look up to the people on the screen and the names on a page. We, their creators, have a tremendous and inevitable responsibility with how we handle that. Movie producers in the 1930s, who started creating films about gangsters, were careful to destroy their subject's honor along with their life because they didn't want susceptible audiences patterning themselves after them. They knew the weight of the consequences, ones that are now frequently realized as artists of all kinds have swept this reality under the carpet. We help create the world we live in, unique from any other profession. Many have and will unavoidably esteem what we have written.
So, before you put that pen to paper, finger to keyboard, or voice to recorder, ask yourself: Who will be the hero?

The Fields of Athenry
This should be the subtitle for my book The Pipes Are Calling. It was the inspiration and this is my favorite version. Enjoy!

The Story behind The Untouchable Queen
When I was a child, I used to look up to writers like Charles Dickens and Hesba Stretton, who used their literary gift to raise awareness for impoverished children secretly abused by Victorian England. I used to wish I had lived then so that I, too, could join the ranks of rebel authors who dared to write on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves, even against the flow of public opinion.
But when I became a teenager and especially as I did research for The Untouchable Queen, a horrible reality hit me: these things do go on. Everyday in India, as well as many other parts of the world, children are abused and their innocence stolen unhindered. Helpless little girls who have no way of defending themselves are subject to atrocities their own families put them through in the name of their religion. How will they ever know that they are loved? How will they know just how precious they are? Who will give them a chance at life, an opportunity to escape?
For more information on this issue, go to https://www.gfa.org/ministries/abando... located on a site called Gospel For Asia, who helps these vulnerable children everyday. And for a beautiful song written to girls who were trafficked, listen to "Priceless" by For King and Country: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPgSr....
Lastly, for excellent books on the subject, I recommend: A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael and Pandita Ramabai: The Story of Her Life. Amy Carmichael and Pandita Ramabai were courageous women who took the matter of saving these children personally. Their organizations are still operating today.
It is in our hands to give these children the better life that they deserve, to let them know that they are priceless.
