Susie Murphy is an Irish historical fiction author. She loves historical fiction so much that she often wishes she had been born two hundred years ago. Still, she remains grateful for many aspects of the modern age, including women's suffrage, electric showers and pizza. Her ongoing A Matter of Class series is a sweeping romance saga that begins in Ireland in 1828 and explores the complexities of love, class and family over the decades that follow.

I started writing stories when I was eleven but throughout my teens I kept giving up on them and putting them away in a drawer because they weren't good enough. I told myself that was the end of it and I wouldn't try any more. But no matter how many times I did that, I inevitably found myself opening the drawer again. So I think that was when I realised it was an impulse inside me that I simply couldn't ignore.

However, I had a long way to go yet - it took more than a decade of writing and revising before I actually published my first book. And it wasn't until I received the feedback from my editor on my second manuscript that I truly started to get "that feeling". She returned it to me earlier than her planned deadline because she was so satisfied with it and that was the point when I felt I had learned so much and really improved as a writer. While there are still doubts and always more to learn, that was definitely a memorable moment for me. Thanks for asking, Mariia!(less)

Farewell to the blog – but it’s not the end…

I started this blog almost exactly six years ago, publishing my first blog post on 20th April 2013. Over that time, I have published 130 posts and have maintained a minimum frequency of at least one post per month. These are very modest numbers compared to other bloggers who blog every week or even every day, but I’m still happy with the content I’ve created over the years.

However, I have recentl

“Cormac supposed he must be nearing his mid-thirties by now – but he had retained his good looks and he carried himself proudly as he disappeared around the corner. Cormac resumed his waiting. His patience was rewarded when, after half an hour had passed, the front door opened again and Miss Davison emerged with Emily by her side; they made their way across the street and vanished into the gardens. This was what he had been hoping for. Now there was nobody left in the house but Bridget and her servants. He tucked the newspaper inside his coat, crossed the street, and was approaching the building when the door opened once more and Bridget herself came out onto the top step. Anticipation mounted within him. Strangely, she was wearing a rather drab ensemble consisting”
