It took me six years to write my first book, so I definitely understand how hard that first draft can be. But no one can read your book unless you have a book. No matter how far from perfect it is, do your best to finish the first draft. And when your whole book is done and edited, move on to the next book.(less)

In that picture, a girl crept through dark hallways with dangerous traps. Everything was opposite of the way it looked: the good things were bad and bad things were good. Only the girl could see what was really in the hallways and she had to convince the others with her to not be afraid. A small crop of daisies looked friendly and inviting, but they were actually poisonous spikes that would instantly kill anyone who touched them. Also, in one room sat the most comfortable bed in the world. But instead of a bed, it looked like a deep, never ending pit. Everyone had to put complete trust in this girl who could tell it was actually safe. That picture sparked more ideas and many things fell into place.

Besides that picture, the very first scene I imagined was the one that takes place in Chapter 25. Basically the entire story and conflict revolves around that scene. It was a lot of fun to write it like that!

The second book comes out January 7, 2019! :)(less)

“If you call me pet ever again, I will claw your eyes out with my bare hands.”
Kay L. Moody, Court of Bitter Thorn

“Imara smoothed the hair on the back of her neck then flounced the curls on top of her head. She tugged at the strands of hair on the back of her neck while she stared at the jar of coconut oil on her desk. With a nod to herself, she threw the coconut oil into the backpack. It took up valuable space, but she’d never be able to tame her curls without it.”
Kay L Moody, Truth Seer: A Futuristic Young Adult Dystopian Filled with Illusion Games

“Imara shrugged. “A hundred years ago, no one thought they had hilas. People thought they were just strangely good at mundane things.”
Kay L Moody, Truth Seer: A Futuristic Young Adult Dystopian Filled with Illusion Games

“Give me all of you!!! I don’t want so much of your time, so much of your talents and money, and so much of your work. I want YOU!!! ALL OF YOU!! I have not come to torment or frustrate the natural man or woman, but to KILL IT! No half measures will do. I don’t want to only prune a branch here and a branch there; rather I want the whole tree out! Hand it over to me, the whole outfit, all of your desires, all of your wants and wishes and dreams. Turn them ALL over to me, give yourself to me and I will make of you a new self---in my image. Give me yourself and in exchange I will give you Myself. My will, shall become your will. My heart, shall become your heart.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“For a fleeting moment, he had the disorienting sense that every decision in his life had inexorably led him here.”
Tiffany Roberts, Make Me Burn

“Stupid people are dangerous.”
Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

“Accept who you are. Unless you're a serial killer.”
Ellen DeGeneres, Seriously... I'm Kidding

“Like we say back home, when you find a turtle settin’ on top of a fencepost, you can be pretty damn sure he didn’t get there on his own.”
Mary Doria Russell, The Sparrow
