Jekyll, Hyde and people who hate cities

As chronicled in Jekyll and Hyde Dramatized, when Richard Mansfield brought his stage adaptation of Stevenson’s novel to England, one David Bandmann whipped up a mockbuster version starring himself. It violated copyright and Stevenson’s people got it shut down fast.

One of the things I’ve picked up on that most books haven’t is that an 1897 adaptation by Luella Forepaugh and George Fish is a direct

Even as someone who reads a lot on this topic, this was impressive and informative. Stewart looks at how the 21st century's right-wing movements rely on a combination of religion, racism, homophobia and misogyny, all backed up by anti-democratic bill ...more

By the end of the 19th century, America was freaking out over the growth of cities (hives of immigrants, political corruption and wage slaves) but some thinkers were contemplating how to make it work better. Over the course of the 20th century, hope ...more

Great concept, meh execution. 2.5 stars.
Premise: the souls of sinners (well, some sinners) end up on Hyde Street, an unpleasant netherworld that will let them leave when they've damned 10,000 other souls. Pranky, a psychopathic boy scout, has accumul

One of those mixed-thoughts-and-feelings reviews. Film nerd that I am, I figured a book on a century of black film would be interesting and a good chunk of it was. However there's also a lot of real-world black history — segregation, the civil rights ...more

A kid gets shot. The shooter is on the run, gets to hide out with an abused, lonely girl, then turns into a bug.
