Rachel Ford lives in beautiful Central Wisconsin. She is a programmer, who works in everything from SQL to .NET to Cisco CVP and IVR. Her latest foray into new and exciting things has been developing custom Java plugins for CVP applications.
Rachel also enjoys recreating historically authentic jewelry, and mixing historical recreations with fantasy elements to create exciting new pieces.
When not designing jewelry or tinkering with computers, Rachel spends her time writing and reading science fiction and fantasy.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

I had the idea for a set of characters who were on different ends of the religious spectrum, but yet were fast friends. Being in a religious minority, and forging bonds with amazing people all along the faith spectrum, interfaith relationships are of great interest to me. People are amazing, and writing about the ways we find to interact, to overcome our differences, is a lot of fun. I also love science fiction, and so that seemed the natural setting: a world of star ships, interplanetary travel, and animatronic police units. Finally, Agata has the same heart condition I do because I know it, and can write it well. And also because I feel like our current world of literature does folks with disabilities (visible and invisible) a disservice by disappearing us completely - or else mentioning us only as objects of pity, or a person who must overcome the disability to become "whole" again somehow (or get superpowers that overcome it, etc). But in the real world, we live full, rich lives every day. We don't need pity (understanding and respect, yes; pity, no), and there are no superpowers (of any kind - alas!). So if we're just out there living normal lives, like every one else, why can't we do that in literature too? We can, of course.
But most importantly from the "story teller" side, I just had the idea for a fun short story (it ended up a little longer than I planned, but that happens sometimes :) ). A trial, a condemnation, a prison break...medieval judges, high-tech prison, and an old ship...just good sci-fi fun!(less)
