I saw what looked like a girl at the window of a neighbor's house and wondered why she never came outside and played. This mystery served as the inspiration for my book "A Shadow in the Dark."(less)

I read this book probably 20 years ago, and around the same time, I read Sense and Sensibility. I much preferred Sense and Sensibility at the time, but now I couldn't tell you much about that novel or even who the main characters were whereas Pride and Prejudice has really stuck with me. This is one of the rare books I would be willing to read twice. The love story of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is captivating.

This is not a love-at-first-sight romance but a dislike-at-first-sight romance. The ensuing interactions between the two are humorous, poignant, and always interesting. Other writers have tried to write dislike-at-first-sight romances, but they must be harder to write than love-at-first-sight romances, because the stories so often feel contrived. I don't find myself falling for the hero and rooting for the heroine as I did in Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen got it right when she created these characters and wrote their love story more than 100 years ago. People are still buying the book and reading about this fictional couple today, so I'm guessing they are a favorite of others also.(less)

Selling nonfiction now

In recent months, I sold two nonfiction stories to be published in books by Guideposts and Bethany House. This was in my spare time, and I also write for my full-time job with the National Science Foundation.

A children’s magazine that I sold a nonfiction story to about 10 years ago tracked me down and asked me if they could reprint that story, with payment. Beginning writers, note this: Nonfiction
