Kay was born in Edinburgh in 1954 and educated at St Thomas Aquinas Senior Secondary School. She left at age 16 to work in the civil service.

A decade later, as a young mother, Kay graduated from Edinburgh University with a Joint Honours degree in Sociology and Social Policy.

Her undergraduate dissertation led her on to postgraduate research into child abuse and neglect in 19th century Edinburgh.

Kay worked for many years as a psychotherapist and counsellor, specialising in working with survivors of childhood abuse and domestic violence.

Retired now, she lives in rural Northumberland with her husband and two sighthounds, Poppet the whippet and rescued greyhound, Bertie.
