Australian author, A.M. Stuart's love affair with Singapore began in 2000 when she moved, with her family to Singapore, where she lived for 3 years, throwing herself into exploring the history and the different cultures of the island.
The idea for the Harriet Gordon Mysteries was born in the microfiche room of Singapore's National Library when she came across an advertisement in a 1905 edition of the Straits Times… "An Englishwoman undertakes Typing and Shorthand… She guarantees… absolute secrecy"!
The first Harriet Gordon Mystery, SINGAPORE SAPPHIRE, was published in 2019 and has been followed by REVENGE IN RUBIES, EVIL IN EMERALD, TERROR IN TOPAZ and AGONY IN AMETHYST. There will be more to come!
Born in Kenya, her family came to Australi

I am an Australian so my natural inclination is to UK/Aus spelling which, I am aware, is more consistent with the time and setting of the Harriet Gordon stories. But where an author is writing for a US market (with a US publisher) the reader preference is, of course, for US spelling so honour becomes honor etc. While we authors like to think our readers are smart enough to be bilingual, we do get reviews criticising (or is that criticizing?) spelling when really it is about usage. The other point of confusion is about dialogue marks - is it ' or "? There is no right or wrong - this is purely a publishing house style. My Australian publisher uses ' and my US publisher uses ". Pity the poor author who has to remember which is which! (less)

Hi! Lovely to hear from you.
There is no doubt that those early years of being born into what was still a colonial society (Kenya became independent in 1963) had a strong influence on the call to write the Harriet Gordon Mysteries.
My grandparents went to Kenya in the 1920s and my mother was born there. My grandfather worked on a malaria eradication programme on Lake Victoria and my great uncle on my father's side was a lawyer instrumental in drafting Kenya's first Constitution.
I am not an apologist for colonialism but I did want to write a story where the characters depicted were not all venal racists... but just people like you and me - with good intentions and a genuine love of country.
I would like to write a story set in Kenya (I have an inkling that Harriet and Julian's ward may follow his hero and go on to be a colonial policeman in 1930s Kenya) but at the moment that is still too close to my heart and writing about Singapore, where I lived as an adult, is in some ways easier.
I hope you are having a lovely day.

RELEASE DAY - AGONY IN AMETHYST

Picture Today is the day... nothing more to be done...
Once release day comes, there is nothing more an author can do except hope that her creation, over which she has agonised for (in my case) 12 long months, is received with kindness.

It is bitter sweet because this is the final book in the Harriet Gordon Mysteries... the series arc has concluded. I am not saying it will be farewell to ever to our fav Read more of this blog post »
