The Dust Bowl aspect is important and clearly a statement on our contemporary behaviors around the environment. So far, I like the two main characters really well and find some of the surrealistic details interesting.

I loved Karen Russell's short story collection, Orange World, so I'm already sort of into what she does. I didn't love Swamplandia when I read it, but I'm thinking about giving it another try at some point.(less)

Short Fiction: Teacher Appreciation Week

She’s the first person he talks to every morning. He told her this once, early on, and now, when she comes into his room in the morning, which happens every morning, she asks specifically, “Was I the first person you talked to today?”

“Yes,” he says and then offers some approximation of, “I left for work this morning before anyone else in my house was awake. Even the dog. You’re the first person I’ Read more of this blog post »

"Bravo! If I had to distill my reaction to The Digital Delusion into a single line, it would be this: finally, an education book that actually says the quiet parts out loud—and backs them with coherent thought instead of tech-evangelist glitter.

Mark Twain
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

David Sedaris
“I should be used to the way Americans dress when traveling, yet it still manages to amaze me. It’s as if the person next to you had been washing shoe polish off a pig, then suddenly threw down his sponge saying, “Fuck this. I’m going to Los Angeles!”

“You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”
