After Dr. Benjamin graduated from medical school, she moved to California for her emergency medicine residency at University of California San Francisco Fresno. She is a rising expert within the disaster medicine community, frequently publishing and lecturing about disaster preparedness and emergency response. After residency, she will move to southern California for an Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine Fellowship at the University of California San Diego.

If…moreI use a technique learned in one of my painting classes. Putting the first few strokes, or words, on a blank sheet of paper can be a daunting task. If I feel stuck, I start by writing mundane events from my day. Or if I'm painting, just throwing a few random strokes down. Once I get warmed up, then the rest tends to flow. Working without worry about the final product is helpful place to start.(less)
An unusual noise emanating from the surgeon's lounge at Hospital Woeisme resulted in one of the greatest medical mysteries in recent history. The sound, described as near constant, loud, and varying in pitch and tone, disturbed and confused any who heard it. When investigated, the cause of the noise turned out to be uncontrollable laughter.
