Everything Matters

Just mark it down right now: the devil is a liar. He says our sin is so small that it won’t affect us, and our good works are so insignificant that they won’t impact anyone else. But there is no such thing as an action without a reaction. In God’s kingdom, everything matters. Here’s how…

Every sin matters.

For thousands of years, people who lived during the time of the Old Testament were taught to abide by certain laws and ordinances. But when the Son God came to earth as a human, he broug...

Old Journal, New Mercies

This morning, I did something I never do; I read through parts of my journal.

It all started because this is my kids’ last week of school, and I wanted to write out some goals for the summer (because what kid doesn’t love structured goals during summer break?). I decided to search my online journal for the word “summer” and adapt goals I’ve made in the past, thus eliminating the need to start from scratch. My search was successful, and I found summer goals from years past. But I also found so...

I am Not Just a Self-Identified Woman

Last month, my husband and I visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Before our tour even began, I was pondering the artwork, specifically this sign right outside the women’s restroom:

Upon discussing this with my husband, he mentioned the “Self-Identified Men” sign outside the restroom he used, along with a selection of complimentary feminine hygiene products. Seeing this sign gave me pause. Self-Identified Woman: Is that what I am?

I am Not Just a Self-Identified Woman

Here’s t...

Two Words for Difficult, Emotionally-Overwhelming Seasons

Sometimes, life can be difficult, and emotions can be so conflicting that it is hard to think. And when I take time to think, my brain and heart can feel so fraught that it’s hard to think correctly.

What do you do when your emotions are obnoxiously loud? Emotions of fear, anger, or worry?

When you get a text that makes your heart race,
hear news that brings a gush of tears to your eyes,
sense your blood boiling into a massive display of anger,
feel a sense of depressing dread that your entire life...

The Spirit Beautifies

This morning, I led a book study for a couple dozen ladies in my local church, and we talked, among other things, about the role of the Holy Spirit.

What does the Spirit do? I love the way Michael Reeves states it in his book, Delighting in the Trinity:

“Job 26:13 puts it delightfully: “By his breath [or Spirit] the skies became fair. In other words, the Spirit garnishes and beautifies the heavens and the earth. Our first vision of the Spirit, hovering dovelike in Genesis 1, captures some...

The Blender, the Toaster, & the Body of Christ

In a house not far from yours, there’s a little blue kitchen with a host of appliances. Of all the appliances in this space, there are two important to our story: a blender and a toaster.

Once upon a time, there lived a blender and a toaster in the same humble cabinet. Both appliances were well-used and loved by their owners. The toaster had more history, having been initiated into the family long before children were present, but the blender often received more praise for its impressive capa...

Ghostwriters, Botox, & Glory

When a Ghost is Better than You

Several months ago I read an article that talked about ghostwriters. The author mentioned that after spending “the better part of the past decade in publishing-adjacent roles, I am surprised any time I discover that a personality-driven release was actually written by its author rather than a ghostwriter.”1

Call me naive, but I assumed if someone was listed as the author then that means what it implies: they wrote the book. Guess I was wrong.2

To further ...

The 13 Best Books I Read in 2024

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The time I peruse which books I want to share from my last 12 months of reading. 2024 was a fairly good year for reading, though I devoted a significant amount of time to writing my book, cutting back on the number of books I consumed.

I take a trip down this lane fairly regularly and it’s always a fun way for me to both review what I read and recommend some great titles to you. (Proof: my book lists from 2023, 2022202120202019201820122011)

Is God Calling Me to Obscurity or Influence?

In July, Christianity Today published an article by E. L. Sherene Joseph titled “Is God Calling Me to Obscurity or Influence?”

I appreciate how this article helped me delve into this topic, and I resonate with the author’s point that “the true measure of success is not a follower count or sales record but our depth of fidelity to God.”

But I must admit that I have problems with the question itself. As my Dad often said when I was growing up:

“If you ask the wrong question,
