HL6214 Final Class of 2026

HL6214 Final Class of 2026

Two nights ago was the final class of the semester for my Editorial Theory & Practice, Functions & Strategies course in the MACWP programme at NTU. The students all presented their final projects—editorial letters for already-existing books—delivered as though pitching them for acquisition at a publisher. There was a wonderful variety to the choices of books to examine (including a few that I’

“I had a teacher I liked who used to say good fiction’s job was to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. I guess a big part of serious fiction’s purpose is to give the reader, who like all of us is sort of marooned in her own skull, to give her imaginative access to other selves. Since an ineluctable part of being a human self is suffering, part of what we humans come to art for is an experience of suffering, necessarily a vicarious experience, more like a sort of “generalization” of suffering. Does this make sense? We all suffer alone in the real world; true empathy’s impossible. But if a piece of fiction can allow us imaginatively to identify with a character’s pain, we might then also more easily conceive of others identifying with our own. This is nourishing, redemptive; we become less alone inside.”
David Foster Wallace

“Words are sacred. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones, in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.”
Tom Stoppard

“Tell all the Truth but tell it slant--
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise

As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind--”
Emily Dickinson

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”
George Orwell, 1984

“The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.”
Albert Einstein

Jason Lundberg Olivia wrote: "Hi, Do you suggest some books of your favourites."

Just looking at my favourite authors listed above:

American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Outside the Dog Museum by Jonathan Carroll
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
The Book of Laughter and Forgetting by Milan Kundera
If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino
1984 by George Orwell.

If you scroll through my "Read" bookshelf, you can see the ones I rated highly as well.

I like it quite a lot so far. I'm only about halfway through, but it's very good. Nicola Griffith's a favorite writer of mine, and she doesn't disappoint.
