I'll typically finish Draft 1 of a 300+ page book within 45 to 60 days. My rule of thumb, write at least eight pages per day, so I target most chapters at the 8 page length. 45 days later I've got 360 pages to edit.(less)

“It was a strange truth that, as weapons and military power got so much more powerful in the modern era, the ability to conquer and successfully occupy and control other countries became almost impossible to achieve.”
John Schettler, Condition Zebra: The Next War - 2025

“Do not engage an enemy more powerful than you. And if it is unavoidable and you do have to engage, then make sure you engage it on your terms, not on your enemy’s terms.” —Sun Tsu: The Art of War”
John Schettler, Resurgent

“Why are we reading, if not in hope of beauty laid bare, life heightened and its deepest mystery probed? Can the writer isolate and vivify all in experience that most deeply engages our intellects and our hearts? Can the writer renew our hope for literary forms? Why are we reading if not in hope that the writer will magnify and dramatize our days, will illuminate and inspire us with wisdom, courage, and the possibility of meaningfulness, and will press upon our minds the deepest mysteries, so that we may feel again their majesty and power? What do we ever know that is higher than that power which, from time to time, seizes our lives, and reveals us startlingly to ourselves as creatures set down here bewildered? Why does death so catch us by surprise, and why love? We still and always want waking.”
Annie Dillard, The Writing Life

“The greatest mystery was not that we have been flung at random among the profusion of the earth and the galaxy of the stars, but that in this prison we can fashion images of ourselves sufficiently powerful to deny our nothingness.”
Maurice Friedman
