Nicole Zelniker (she/they) is the indie author of several books, including FROM WHERE WE ARE and WE ARE MADE OF SCARS & STARLIGHT, which have both been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and her young adult debut, ALL I KNOW SO FAR. She’s also the founder of Knee Brace Press, which is an online literary magazine devoted to stories about disability and mental health.

In her free time, Nicole enjoys re-reading her favorite books, talking about the intersection of queerness and chronic illness on the internet, and cuddling her formerly semi-feral tabby cat. You can keep up with them on TikTok at @nicolewritesbooks or Threads, Bluesky, and Instagram at @nicolezelniker.

What Feeds Below by Tatiana Schlote-Bonne
"I started writing What Feeds Below soon after I finished my second book, The Mean Ones, which draws heavily from my own life and relationship trauma. I needed a break from dredging up my past and wanted to write a book that was pure fun and escapism." Read more of this review »

“If you never see yourself in the world, how are you supposed to think you exist?”

Such a beautiful book. I hope queer kids are able to pick this up and see themselves in its pages. I know I would have.

Quotes by Nicole Zelniker  (?)

“He didn’t hate his body, even if it attacked itself frequently and during inopportune moments, but he had a hard time finding joy in adorning it, in seeing his new self in the dressing room mirrors in clothes that would have been too big just a few months ago or in a nice shirt he wasn’t sure he’d be well enough to wear to some party or another.

Weight changes sucked. Pain sucked. Being sick sucked.”
Nicole Zelniker, We Are Made of Scars and Starlight

“Therapy doesn’t mean you’re broken. It just means you might need a little help being whole.”
Nicole Zelniker, Letters I'll Never Send

“There is no right. There is no wrong. There is only the endless effort to leave this world a better place than it was the day before.”
Kamilah Cole, This Ends in Embers

“It feels like a damn miracle every time someone like you, or me, can see through the fog of our childhood and reach for the sun.”
Natalie Naudus, Gay the Pray Away

“There are streaks of dirt on the backs of my hands.
Like I've fought with something and won.

That is the thing
I choose to remember.”
Hayley Chewins, I Am the Swarm

“Just know, Briana Matthews," he says, "that you are worth this and more.”
Tracy Deonn, Bloodmarked

“There is something about the withering of consecrated ground that makes my skin crawl. I wonder what becomes of a god when their church falls to ruin and their congregants are nothing but bone. Is this place still holy? If we prayed to this god, would he hear us?

Would we want him to?”
H.E. Edgmon, Godly Heathens
