Robert (Bob) Reid grew up in Scotland’s beautiful border country. Hawick was home until it was time to go to university in Edinburgh. A degree and a PhD in Chemistry followed. It was in Edinburgh that Bob met and married Phyllis. Work opportunities took them south, and their son Simon was born in Cheshire and their daughter Charis some years later in Swindon. Highworth, near Swindon, became home in 1982. It still is home and has become a special place to Bob and Phyllis.
Bob’s career of forty years was initially in technical management, then general management and business consulting. Work generally took priority over creativity. Semi-retirement in early 2018 created the time, family and friends the encouragement, for Bob to develop his wri

Hi John,

Something I struggled with. The first twenty pages of White Light Red Fire were completed in about 2000. It wasn't finished until 2019 when I was semi retired. Thinking back if I had been given this advice back then it would have been completed much sooner. "Write one page a day and by the end of the year you will have a 365 page book (366 pages some years.)" I would add to that advice - don't worry about the quality of each page just keep the story moving. You can tidy it all up during editing when you have the complete story. Hope that helps a little. Good luck with it.

What an appropriate question at this time.

It is a mystery to me that after a stroke ( that I had in January) and after getting more increased mobility since the stroke over 8 months - in the past month when I have been doing more exercise so my ability to walk any significant distance has reduced and my walking has become much more of a stumble.

It certainly is a mystery - not sure it would be a plot for a book unless my stumbling caused some other event to happen. (less)

Sometimes small things make most impact

I have an older friend in a care home. His eyesight is not so good. He has a lady who reads to him once a week. Out of curiosity he purchased The Emperor. I have since given them The Son and The Thief. The two of them have read The Emperor and are half way through The Son. Both of them are now engrossed in the series and are trying to find more reading time. Two individuals both captivated by my s Read more of this blog post »

Robert Reid answered a question about The Empress:
The Empress by Robert Reid
I don’t know what I would have focussed on but then I wasn’t exiled on Lat. However Sylva very much focussed on escape initially and by definition she had to gather information to plan the routes to escape. After a few failed attempts Sylva largely b See Full Answer

“At seventeen the young woman had worked out how to improve her future prospects; she would seduce the Prince.”
Robert Reid, The Emperor

“I believe the red stone was kept under lock and key in the dungeon far below Aldene Castle. I know that in 1507, when the Eldest visited Aldene, he was concerned about something dangerous that was held in Aldene’s dungeon.”
Robert Reid, The Thief

“The wizard broke out from his mountain grave
As his red fire filled the cave
The miners ran to escape their doom
All in its path red fire would consume

The fire would destroy Sparsholt
Before cannons at the Alol melt
On Tamin Plain the flax would burn
And reveal a name… Arin

The time of the wizard is here
Destruction, death and fear
Some say the world will end
Others say a child is seeking revenge

I am a minstrel and not a seer
All I know is…
The time of the wizard is here
Destruction, death and fear
Robert Reid – The Son”
Robert Reid, The Son

“It is all around us now, in one God-forsaken territory after another. Blood sacrifice in the name of a better future. Only the dead like Tollund Man have seen the end of it. All we seem to have learned so far is that such killing never ends, never will.”
Neil Oliver, Wisdom of the Ancients: Life lessons from our distant past

“Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?”
Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

“In order to understand how thousands of isolated cultures coalesced over time to form the global village of today, we must take into account the role of gold and silver, but we cannot disregard the equally crucial role of steel”
Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

“His gaze lingered on the ruins of the keep. Twenty-two years ago , he had made a promise in the shadow of those walls - a promise to uphold his family's claim to the throne.
In the end, he had done so much more than that. In the end, he had upheld his nation's claim to their kingdom.”
Robyn Young, Kingdom

“In so far as a story of the world can have a beginning, let it begin with Enheduanna , the first named poet.”
