Entertainment Weekly called Martin Clark “hands down, our finest legal-thriller writer.” The New York Times stated that he is “the thinking man’s John Grisham.” The Winston-Salem Journal declared that he has set “the new standard by which other works of legal fiction should be judged,” and David Baldacci praised him as “a truly original writer.” A retired circuit court judge from Patrick County, Virginia, Martin is a cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College and attended law school at the University of Virginia. When he was appointed to the bench in 1992 at age thirty-two, he became one of the youngest judges in the history of the commonwealth. His novels have appeared on numerous bestseller lists, and the audio version of The ...more

It's definitely not my place--or good form--to in any fashion rate people or characters. Ralph Clay and Hazel Clark raised us different than that. I'd like to think that all of my TSO characters--except the obvious villains--are beautiful in some way or another. Especially Nelson. And thanks again for coming out to visit at Parnassus. I very much appreciated your thoughts on the jailbird riff--indeed, something a little less optimistic than my norm. Big cheers to you--MFC(less)

And apologies--I still struggle to make my way around Goodreads, and I'm just now seeing this. My friend and mentor Tom Wolfe told me that seat-time, actually sitting down and writing every day, even when you don't feel like it, is the key to turning out good books. Me, I still write early every morning and still enjoy it. I think it's important to have the habit, the rhythm, and I'm convinced good things come from putting in the time. Good luck. And...oh...have fun with it. Best--MFC (less)

“When you really want something, when you lust, seek, desire, await, anticipate or expect, when you sit in front of the TV after the late news twirling a plastic spoon in a bowl of lukewarm skim milk and saturated puffs of Special K, praying for nine or so hours to pass so that you can check the morning mail to see if the college accepted, the one-night stand wrote, the tax refund arrived or Publisher's Clearing House made you the winner of a dream house in Wisconsin, when you're really looking forward to something, that's when Fortuna dispatches a couple of her handmaidens to drop a load of shit on you.”

Mackey: Thanks for my first message. Took a bit, but I found it. Please remind me in July if I forget, and if you're of a mind to read it, I'll send you the new one...or have Knopf get a copy to you. That would be great, and show the folks in Gotham that I'm not just wandering around on here, wasting time, cutting my own trails, and only making friends with bourbon drinkers, fellow anglers, dog owners, Larry Brown fans and people who like Miss Welty. Cheers--MFC

Mackey Thank you for the friendship Martin. Your books actually do sound very appealing to me and their reviews are marvelous. Great job! The legal genre once was all that I read back in my poli-sci days; I've just spread out into publisher's requests over the past year. It brings different flavors to my bookshelves.
