James E. Hutter was born in Columbus, Ohio, in late 1964. Raised by a working-class family on the South Side of the city, he developed a strong work ethic and the tenacity to question the world around him.

Socialized around those slightly younger, Hutter identifies as an elder member of Generation X. He harbors no nostalgia for hippies nor the Vietnam War era, instead preferring the Post-Punk culture of his youth.

“Just the Normal Abuse,” his debut novel, tells of his 1970’s childhood attending a public school in a blue-collar neighborhood. Chock full of contemporary pop culture references, the story focuses upon his two years of study under a brilliant but abusive teacher.
