Darin Miller was born in Portsmouth but currently resides in Grove City, both of which are located in Ohio. While he has worked in Information Technology for three decades, he has not solved a single, solitary crime to date. He is the BookFest award-winning author of the Ohio-based Dwayne Morrow Mystery series, as well as an unrelated short story collection, Broken Bits and Bobs, and a standalone psychological horror thriller, Equilibrium. With equal parts action, humor, suspense and mystery, the Dwayne Morrow series features characters you’re sure to love—and in some cases, loathe.

Penny, Lisa, and Holly may not see each other as often, but not a single day goes by where they don’t touch base via WhatsApp. The years since college have taken them on wildly disparate paths, and all three have married the men of their dreams and settled into lifestyles they never imagined. Time and distance make it easy to suppress the mounting sense of dissatisfaction that has begun to creep into all of their lives.

When Penny’s husband, Drake, announces yet another business trip that will pull him away from his wife and children for an extended period, Penny decides it’s time to get the old gang together for a girls’ weekend. Drake’s income provides her with the means to host everyone, and honestly, hasn’t it been long enough?

Once the liquor starts to flow, so do the confessionals, and in no time flat, each of the ladies begins to realize that their picture-perfect marriages are anything but, and the common denominator in each scenario is a husband who has proven to be less than what he initially seemed. Everything would be so much better for everyone if they were no longer part of the picture.

It only takes a little more libation before the ladies are up to their elbows in orchestrating the murders of their husbands in a convoluted murder-for-trade plot that owes more than a little to “Strangers on a Train,” a fact Huntley winks at before launching into her own imaginative version. The friends don’t even make it to Step One before this train careens wildly off track, with the women learning more than they ever expected about a shared past that has some interesting discrepancies depending upon the point of view.

Huntley keeps everything moving at a brisk pace as the best laid plans of all our leads begin to unravel, dropping little truth bombs of backstory that begin to reframe everything we thought we knew in an entirely unexpected context. The last quarter of this book had my jaw on the ground as I waited for the dust to finally settle.

Engrossing until the very end. Highly recommended and looking forward to digging into more from Huntley. ...more "
