Sadly, Storm is not available to come to the aid of the three other planes that have crashed under similar circumstances, killing everyone on board. Interestingly, many of the victims are powerful people in politics, business and religious groups.

Richard Castle Interview by Crimespree Magazine
(This interview was conducted last spring before Castle went missing.)
RAGING HEAT, the latest Nikki Heat novel from Kingswell is on sale Sept 16th. You can follow him on Twitter @WriteRCastle. And tune in on ABC Sept 29th to find out the latest!
Erica Ruth Neubauer: How much do you think the Nikki Heat series is like your real-life relationship with Detective Beckett?
Richard Castle: I like to think I draw from the best parts of our adventures to give my readers an unforgettable experience with every novel. A ruggedly handsome writer following a smart, sexy Detective… you can’t get more real-life than that!
ERN: Does it change how you feel about your character Derrick Storm now knowing that your real-life father is actually a spy?
RC: Wait. How do you know my father is a spy? Who are you working for?
ERN: How do you find time to write while you are working cases with Detective Beckett?
RC: It turns out there’s a lot of paperwork when you’re a cop. While Beckett stays late writing up her case reports, I go home and write my novels. I think my job’s more fun because I get to make stuff up, and I get paid more. A lot more.
ERN: How do you deal with being in danger when you are the only one not carrying a gun?
RC: As an unarmed writer, I employ the power of my imagination to help calm my nerves. I have these little games I play. Sometimes I pretend that I’m the lead character in a TV show, and can never get hurt too badly. Honestly, the people I work with are very good at their jobs, and they have guns, so I always feel well protected.

When he decides to work the case with Heat as his next big story, Nikki is at first happy to have him ride along. Yes, she must endure Rook’s usual wild conspiracy speculations and adolescent wisecracks, but after reuniting following his recent assignment abroad, she’s glad for the entertainment, the chance to bounce ideas, and just to be close to him again and feel the old spark rekindle. But when Rook’s inquiry concludes that Detective Heat has arrested the wrong man for the murder, everything changes.

Fans
I can see how an outsider might view a fan holding me hostage and then shooting me as a real turn off. And granted, it was an extreme and terrifying situation, but it won’t tarnish how I feel about my fans. It’s not like this was my first run-in.

Musing on Muses
Change can strike fear into the heart of a writer. We are a stubborn breed, prone to getting stuck in our ways. We have favorite chairs and favorite pens; we start our days with the same cup of coffee and end them with the same glass of scotch. So when my creative routine was uprooted a few months ago, I wasn’t sure how well I’d fare.

The Joy of Writing
I was reminded today of what a joy writing can be. Not because it was a particularly productive day or because I wrote anything more eloquent or clever than usual, but because something happened to me recently that forced me to reevaluate my life, and, by extension, my writing.

Book Tours
I still remember my first book tour. I drove down to this Mom and Pop bookstore in Philadelphia during rush hour and then hit up a public library in Hoboken on the way back. Three people fell asleep while I was reading, some teenagers heckled me and an elderly woman pinched my butt. Plus, it took me three months to get the $37.56 my publisher owed me for gas and a cheeseburger. I loved every second of it. Your first book tour is a seal of approval. Suddenly you go from wanting to be a writer, to being a writer and the shift is profound and exciting.
