I was born with a craniofacial anomaly – cleft palate. It was a part of my life that I wanted to forget, until recently. I joined the Facebook group Our Cleft lip and Palate Support Group :*) where I learned that many children and their families were struggling with cleft palates and lips in a much deeper way than I ever struggled. I try to give the “hugs” emoji when people post their difficulties, but it feels inadequate. How could I lift children up who struggle with this? I’m an author so my go-to was to write a book about a character with a bilateral cleft. I didn’t want it to be preachy or focus only on the anomaly.
