The original idea was about a person, Spider, who was vaguely based on a mechanic I took my car to in SF in the 70's and also on a neighbor I had in Phoenix before I moved to in SF. These were funny, unassuming, big guys whom I liked and sort of admired, since they seemed to have a calm and centeredness that I felt I lacked. It intrigued me to write a book about 'not me' in that sense. And the idea, all along, was to place a sane person like that in the middle of insane events, and to see the events, and the world, through that person's perspective. I was (and am) weary of novels that start with someone who's totally messed up in one way or another.(less)

I am enjoying writing about Spider and Siobhan as 40-50 year olds and introducing two Gen X characters whom I am growing quite fond of. (less)
