Ronald grew up in the Chicago suburb of Wood Dale. At fifteen he ran away to New Orleans, where he lived on Skid Row until betrayed by a priest. As a disaffected seventeen-year-old high school dropout in 1969, Ronald took LSD while hitchhiking into the western American counterculture. He became involved in radical movements, including the SDS Days of Rage. In 1975 he hitchhiked across North Africa and the Middle East, spent time on a kibbutz, and working at a copper mine in Israel's Negev desert, then on to India and Nepal, where he spent nine months studying Buddhism under Lama Yeshe. As to earning degrees and developing writing craft, that was a whole different adventure. I had to put everything including job opportunities on hold and just go for it. It became a dark period to get through, because I couldn't qualify for a student loan, back when they were reasonable, and I had to get by on too little sleep as I worked my way, paying tuition as I went. On the bright side, I had no student debt at the end of the tunnel. (less)

Shout at the sky and hear the hollow echo in reply. You are alone. Something is missing from your life and you must find it. Do what you feel in your bones needs doing, and then it all comes back, nagging you, interrupting your sleep. Put whatever that is on the page and let it pull you along into the torrent of desperate emotion.(less)
