“Why can’t I come in this way? The cafe’s a black-and-tan. Negroes allowed to come through the front door just like white folks.”
Denny S. Bryce, Wild Women and the Blues

“After they left, the hard edges of my life floated toward the sky, like a thousand pounds of excuses, leaving me feeling a freedom that’s hard to describe. But imagine suddenly growing the wings of a bird. And knowing with all my heart and soul, I don’t have to run anymore. I can fly.”
Denny S. Bryce, In the Face of the Sun
