From Soccer to C-Suite, an organization focused on supporting girls and young women, held their first in a series of 15 nationwide workshops at Kennesaw State University last week.

“Girls are having a hard time right now— even more so than boys,” said Greg Charlop, the founder of From Soccer to C-Suite, and a self-described girl dad.

Dr. Greg said the organization hopes to use these workshops not only as a way to help girls, but also to connect people who are interested in helping but maybe don’t know where to begin.

The five hottest U.S. cities in the summer are Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson, Riverside and San Antonio, each often reaching into the triple digits. “Extreme heat events can be dangerous to health – even fatal. These events result in increased hospital admissions for heat-related illness, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory disorders,” according to the CDC.


“The elderly and very young are most vulnerable to heat,” says Gregory Charlop, MD, an Atlanta-based sports medicine physician and co-founder of the Women’s Sports Forum.


“More than 90% of heat-related deaths occur in folks over age 75, according to an Italian study. The best advice is for the elderly to remain indoors during the day's heat, close the shades, and drink plenty of water. Seniors should contact their doctor at the first sign of dizziness, fast heart rate, or muscle cramps.”

“When they’re on a team for a sport they feel a part of something, but even better than that exercise itself is good for the brain; it helps prevent depression. Struggling With Depression? Try Fish Oil

We may have a powerful (and safe) new weapon in the war against depression. Recent studies suggest that high-dose omega-3s may reduce the symptoms of major depressive disorder. Your daily fish oil capsules are now good for your heart, brain, and mood!

Fish oil works fast. Folks taking 3 gm/day of EPA or 1.4 gm/day of DHA felt better in under 12 weeks. Scientists believe that fish oil might make us feel better by decreasing brain inflammation and unlocking the brain's ability to heal itself. Honestly, I'm not surprised by the new research. I've been recommending high-dose fish oil to my anti-aging patients for years. We've long known that fish oil can help sufferers of certain types of difficult to treat depression. 

Based on the newest research, it's probably safe to say that most people with depression should try adding fish oil to their daily routines. To protect the environment and your health, I recommend selecting sustainably sourced products low in mercury. Start with one or two capsules a day and work your way up.

Note: algae oil may be a suitable alternative for vegans or those unable to eat fish. Be sure to choose a brand rich in DHA and EPA.

Sleep more now - or risk dementia later

I had to rush out and tell you about a shocking new study about sleep and brain health. People who don’t get enough sleep in middle age are at greater risk for memory loss and dementia as they grow older, according to an article published in the prestigious journal Nature.

Here’s what they found. Folks who slept 6 hours or less in their 50s and 60s were more 30% more likely to suffer from dementia as seniors. In other words, poor sleep habits now cause serious brain problems later. This relationship held true even when they corrected for confounding variables like other medical problems and socioeconomic status.

Sleep is good for more than brain health. A recent study looked at the recent decline in heart attacks. They suggest that increased sleep due to the pandemic may be protecting our hearts!

I recommend all my patients secure at least 7-8 hours of high-quality sleep per night. The evidence is clear, let’s make it happen!
