There is a lot to like about this book, which is the third in the Kate Ellis series. For one thing, it is one of the only collections of short stories featuring the same lesbian sleuth. For one thing, it is one of the only collections of short stories featuring the same lesbian sleuth. In fact, at least 5 of the current 9 books of the series are made up of short stories. This one begins when a British Muslim woman comes into the station on the run from her husband, who is 30 years her senior and with whom she was set up by her parents in an arranged marriage. At the end of the story she escapes by running away, but we feel that we h ave not seen the last of her.

Other stories include one where a woman fakes being raped and beaten by her ex-boyfriend; another about a schoolgirl who is molested and groomed by one of her female teachers. In both of these stories—which are well crafted—the author is careful not to offend. That is, Detective Constable Ellis finds indisputable proof that 1. the first woman did indeed fake her injuries and was lying about the rape and that 2. the schoolgirl really was molested by the teacher. The twist about these two cases is that when the woman lies about the rape attempt, it goes against everything that DC Ellis and her colleagues believed about such cases and might tend to make them doubt—if only a little—similar future reports. Ditto the second example, where several of Ellis’ team couldn’t wrap their minds around a female teacher grooming a girl student.

And, yes, we see the woman from the first story reappear in a later one. In the meantime, we get information about DC Ellis, her love lives past and present, her colleagues, and her feelings. In fact, some of the “stories” are actually chapters with just enough information to tie the actual crime stories together. The non-crime stories are segues to the more exciting ones.

A couple of curiosities, though. A female—especially a gay female—teacher grooming one of her students is not the nearly unheard-of crime that Kate and her colleagues see it as. And in the story about the Muslim honor killing, the actual culprit should have been the first person that was investigated.

Buty all in all, it was a satisfying read, although only 4 of the chapters actually worked as short stories. The others did their job as bridges between the crimes and gave insights into Kate’s non-working hours.

See, for instance, Nekesa Afia’s Harlem Renaissance Mysteries, Trish MacEnulty’s “Delafield and Malloy Investigations, Connie Dowell’s Emma and Dessa Mysteries, Rob Osler’s Harriet Morrow Investigations, and R.J. Koreto’s Historic Homes Mysteries. Among others. Now here’s one more. The Harriman and Mancini Mysteries. All this is good news—not because they are historical whodunits but because they are whodunits at a time in our literature that is overrun with novels labeled Romantic Blend or Romantic Suspense. And by the way, most of the series I mentioned above are worth reading.

All are different, of course, but the Harriman and Mancini books are different in an interesting way. Although they are both lesbians and have alternating chapters, they have separate love interests. As far as my reading can tell, this is unique in lesbian mystery fiction. Their relationships are neither spicy nor particularly romantic, but they do take the books in a slightly different direction than most. And each of the characters is interesting. Margot is a business owner, Loretta a private detective, Shiloh is a magician’s assistant and amateur criminal, and CeeCee is a night nurse studying to be a doctor.

Margot Harriman has just inherited a successful food brand and is determined that the company’s board of directors not find anything wrong with a woman running the business. But then she receives a mysterious message from a dead woman warning her that some skullduggery exists within the company. If these unspecified activities reach the public’s ears, it might mean the end of the company. So Margot decides to hire a young detective to ferret out the problem. But the detective has problems of her own.

Students of classic feminist literature will recognize the trope of men dismissing the business acumen of women from Elizabeth Stuart Phelps’ 1871 novel, Silent Partner. Like Perley Kelso—the protagonist of Silent Partner—Margot has a protective man worming his way into her private life. Both women send these nuisances packing after they show their true colors. And I’m not saying that I believe that Pegau has read the Phelps novel, but late in A Murderous Business, the two protagonists, wounded both mentally and physically, work out an arrangement between them that Margot calls “a silent. . . partnership.”

I have a few minor quibbles. The idea of men dismissing women as inferior in some way comes up way too often and there are coincidences that are, let’s just say, fortuitous. But there are length considerations for all novels, and if Dickens can get away with it . . .This is a good start to a series and deserves no less than a 4.

Yes, the mystery is more absorbing and intricate than in the first 2 books of the series, the characters more alive, and the writing more assured, but what I liked most was what the author had learned while writing those previous two books.

For one thing, we finally learn the ages of Maddie and her friend Kris. They met in first grade and have been inseparable friends for 9 years, so they are 15 (plus or minus a few months). And Maddie finally admits that she is gay. She even gets asked out on a date by a beautiful blond teen named Charlie. Trouble is, Charlie is one of Maddie’s prime suspects in her latest mystery.

It seems that Kris—an avid sports enthusiast and accomplished skier—is one of 10 girls invited to a junior invitational at a nearby mountain resort. Charlie is the daughter of the resort owner, who is the man organizing the event, hoping to get it in the regular competition schedule. But almost as soon as Maddie and Kris arrive at the resort on Whistler Mountain, things start going wonky.

Even before the first event, one of the competitors is hospitalized by having an allergic reaction to the hotel food. And so there were nine. Another competitor wipes out on the course, earning her a trip to the hospital as well. So they there were eight. The decreasing number of eventers parallels the decreasing number of dinner guests in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. And the author, to her credit, tells us that it is a tip of the hat to Christie, not a ripoff, by letting us know that Maddie—a mystery novel lover—has recently discovered Christie.

One of the best things about the book is what the reader can learn about skiing and skiing events. The detail is greater than in book 1, which chronicles a dog show, and it is also more exciting. It would be nice if Maddie’s date was as exiting, but we can’t have everything. In fact, the author glosses over the date, referring to it only in a very short and unsatisfying flashback in which they walked through the small town “hand in hand.” Well, that’s something anyway.

But let’s talk about the writing for a while. It is very plain and straightforward. No big words; the targeted reader isn’t interested in looking up new vocabulary. Rather, the language contains situations, contrivances, and clichéd descriptions that would negatively impress an older reader, but would be new and fresh to kids that are just beginning to read for pleasure. And there is a reason that a cliché becomes a cliché: it works. The mystery is a gripping one, but the author makes sure that no reader will be left by the roadside—Maddie and her friends go over the circumstances and the clues four or five times so that the readers will know exactly what is happening. Give this one a YA-appropriate 4 and quiet applause.

In fact, one reviewer enthused that the main characters were LGBTQ—not just “sidekicks.” Truth is, though, that although Maddie’s friends Kris and Jamie are lesbian and gay respectively, we are not actually told anything about Madison’s sexuality other than this offhand phrase from Kris: “You’re just jealous that I have a girlfriend and you don’t.” This is hardly proof. It just tells us that one of the other characters thinks that Maddie is gay. It isn’t until book 3—I looked ahead—that Maddie actually affirms that she “likes girls” and gets a crush on a girl named Charlie.

Another interesting omission is that the ages of none of the characters are given. Nancy Drew was 16, then 18 in the original series; Maddie and her pals—judging by their speech and activities— could be anywhere between 12 and 16. It is as if the author has not quite got a firm grip on her characters.

The story—about someone attempting to sabotage a high-class dog show—takes place almost 100 percent in the show arena itself. Like the best Nancy Drew stories, it gives the reader an insight into an interesting experience. In other words, the reader finds out a lot about dogs and dog breeds. Plus marks for this, especially from dog lovers.

Like Nancy, Maddie is being raised by a single parent who is a lawyer, but in this case, it is her mother. No mention is made of Maddie’s father. One of the characters has the first name of Carson—the same as Nancy’s father. And, of course, Maddie, like Nancy, has two close friends that investigate mysteries with her. One of them—Kris—like Nancy’s friend Bess, is obsessed with food. She is also athletic, like Nancy’s other friend, George.

Although the writing is good enough, the storyline seems to need a bit of editing, as it indicates that Maddie has had many mysteries to investigate before this one. Yet only one adventure—at a school visit to an aquarium—is mentioned. And even this is not a mystery, nor does Maddie investigate anything. The fact that this is the second edition of the book indicates that changes were made. Maybe not enough.

But the lack of backstory is disappointing, although not unusual, or even necessary, in books with a lower reading lever. For 8-13-year-olds, it is an adequate read. For older readers, not so much. Still, a YA series with a lesbian sleuth—assuming the rumor is true—is unusual indeed, and badly needed. As far as my research has determined, only two other YA mystery series exist as of 2026: The Elodie Fontaine mysteries by Iza Moreau and the Emmie and Dessa series by Connie B. Dowell, although in both of Dowell’s characters are older and more mature. So as a pre-YA series story, give this one a 4 or so.

With equanimity, you’re not quite sure if you like it or not, but either way only slightly. And if you look forward to it with joy, you may find yourself reading well into the night. Death at Morning House is one of the latter.

The first thing I noticed about this novel is the voice, perfect for an older teen like protagonist Marlowe Wexler. Her anticipation and fear of asking her crush out on a date, her guilt and depression when an accident cuts that date short, and the difficulty of trying to fit in with a new crowd once she gets a summer job at a nearby tourist attraction are all rendered faithfully and believably by the author. And the audiobook reader, Katherine Littrell, seems to understand that voice perfectly.

The second thing I noticed was that the scenes in the present were blended beautifully with flashbacks from 1932, when a tragedy occurred at the tourist attraction Marlowe is working as a tour guide for. I was also impressed that characters from both eras were interesting. As was the story and its mystery, to a point.

I’m also seeing a pattern in fiction these days where the authors not only include a happy ending, but several. For a literary example of what I mean, see Atmosphere, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book is another. I mean, not only do we find out who committed the crimes—in both eras—but a passerby just happens to get footage of one of them while photographing something else. It’s a little much.

I have written often about the solving of the mysteries are generally the least believable, most contrived, and tortuously overthought part of the book. It’s as if the authors wait until they get to the last chapter before figuring out who the culprit is. There are a number of hastily accepted deductions here, including the most important—one dealing with a mat that was out in the rain. I won’t go far enough to say that the ending was a mess, but some may find it so. More important, maybe, is that a YA readership is more likely to accept it.

Sebastian’s Catholic school in New Orleans. With this background in mind, I expected to find a rough-and tumble, motorcycle-riding hell raiser. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised when the book began with a poetic, descriptive, and musing paean to the city of New Orleans. The writing is both strong and penetrating. It segues seamlessly into a tragic scene of arson and death, around which the story revolves. A serial arsonist is targeting Saint. Sebastian’s for reasons unknown. And when the perpetrator seems to be leaving clues at the scenes suggesting that Holiday herself is the firebug, the good sister decides to find the answers herself. In doing so, she gets on the wrong side of the two investigating police officers as well fire investigator Magnolia Riveaux—a woman overworked, often overlooked, and propped up on pain pills. Grudgingly, however, Maggie consents to allow Holiday—who of course has inside knowledge of the premises—to work with her on the case.

The case itself is a good one with a lot of fire and excitement, but throughout the story, but the idea of arson and fire as a destructive force of nature is part of what may be the author’s agenda. The next book in the series deals with the might of water

Holiday often flashes back to her former life in New York and her days as a punk band front woman just on the verge of success. A large proportion of these memories involve her girlfriend Nina—another punk musician who was in love with Holiday but married to a man. But when Nicholas is away, the two of them find a way to play and Holiday, nun or not, describes their encounters with emotion and spice.

And it seems that her vows have not exactly erased the young nun’s libido as she begins a not-so-one-sided flirtation with the school’s science teacher, Rosemary Flynn—who is Holiday’s opposite and who seems to alternately despise her and crush on her.

But overriding everything is the language. Truth is, this is the kind of book that people who do not recognize exceptional writing may find boring. But author Douaihy has as firm a grip on both internal monologue first-person point of view as anyone I can remember and Holiday’s musings go far beyond that of average writers. Not only does she use poetic language, but goes into heights few authors will attempt by seeming to be able to make almost any subject or thought into an aphorism. Have you ever needed to consult Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations? Well, Douaihy could probably collect her own creations into a volume. Here’s just two examples I found in nearby pages:

“Earth can be a heaven or a hell, depending on perspective.” “To break a horse or a human, you must first understand wildness.”

Sister Holiday is a calming, rational, and rather beautiful being and Scorched Grace is superior to just about everything else in the genre. Despite a few small quibbles I have with the story, it still rates way closer to a 5 than a 4.
