S.C. Langley is the pen name of Simon Langley-Evans.

Simon is a retired academic who lives in Leicestershire with his wife and several cats who regard him as a disappointing member of staff. After many years writing about nutrition, he now spends his time watching wildlife and inventing crimes that fortunately never happen in real life.

In his previous life he wrote textbooks for students of nutrition and dietetics, including Nutrition, Health and Disease: A Lifespan Approach (Wiley, 2021). Thousands of students have been forced to read at least some of it, which he considers a respectable achievement.
Since escaping academia, Simon has described himself as a recovering academic. He occasionally relapses by writing about research culture or ex

"This is the second book I have read featuring Kate Ellis and it does not disappoint if you are a fan. If not already a fan you have a treat in store but I’d recommend reading Love and Anger first.

message 1: by S.C.

S.C. Langley I am the author of the Detective Kate Ellis series, which launches in October 2025.

Three decades. One detective. A lifetime of cases.

Kate Ellis has spent her career chasing the truth through witness interviews, crime scenes, and the darkest corners of human behaviour. But this is no ordinary police series.

Told across both novels and linked short story collections, The Detective Kate Ellis Series follows Kate from her early years as a WPC in the late 1990s, through her rise into major crime investigation, and into the high stakes, politically charged world of twenty first century policing.

Each volume, whether a full length novel or a taut collection of interlinked cases, builds on the last. Recurring characters grow and change. Relationships deepen, fracture, and sometimes end. Threads begun in one book may not resolve until years later.

It is an immersive, character driven journey: authentic police work woven with the human cost of crime, and the toll it takes on those sworn to fight it.

Kate Ellis is a woman who happens to be a detective, not a detective who happens to be a woman.

Reading Order

To follow Kate Ellis’s story in chronological order:

1️⃣ Love and Anger (Novel) — 1997–1998
2️⃣ Minor Injuries (Short story collection) — 1998–1999
3️⃣ No Further Action (Short story collection) — 2000–2002
4️⃣ Brutal Country (Short story collection) — 2002–2003 (Publication March 2026)
5️⃣ Dark Waters (Novel) — 2004 (Publication summer 2026)
6️⃣ Lectures on Death (Short story collection) — 2025 (final in the timeline)

Future novels and collections will explore earlier periods of Kate’s life and career, but Lectures on Death remains the conclusion to her story.
