Brooklyn born and raised. The serious and silly often collide in my work. What can I do? It just happens. I think it's very apparent in "Brooklyn Valentine" where the Brooklyn born hero is flawed AND funny. His love interest, a midwesterner, is serious but slyly funny in her own way.

CyberYenta is a humor book written before GOOGLE even existed! Even way back then tech was making fools of us.

In "Brooklyn Valentine" I got to be inside the head of a man very unlike myself. I had to stretch to make him do/say things I would never do. That's the fun part! "Write what you know" never made much sense to me. If I already know it, there are no suprises and nothing to learn.(less)

When To Break The Spell

When writing memoir we start out intending to write about a time, a place, an incident, a person. As we write, our memories start to flow. We cast a spell over ourselves. This can lead to writing things like, "I can't remember what happened next but...", or "I think he said," or "It may have been..." These words are the product of the mind as it tries to remember . Like "The Secret History," this novel disappoints. In trying to understand why, I came up with this:

Rachel Levine is on page 250 of 309 of No Country for Old Men: Just learned this was originally written as a screenplay. Makes sense. No interest in seeing the movie, though.
Amazing how such sparse dialogue can still convey character.

An incredible work. Tour de force. To be able to write about that war (Viet Nam) from many perspectives, all convincingly, is something amazing. I do wonder if, over time, people will care about this book when those of us who were alive during the wa ...more
