I grew up in small town America. My hearing loss was discovered in 4th grade but nothing was done. My first book begins in 4th grade moving to and past my first successful cochlear implant in 2002. But it's not chronological at all. My writing is to encourage all readers to just keep moving and rely on what you can do, not what you cannot.

I loved being a reporter and I believe I was better at journalism because I had to work so hard for each story. I truly felt I owned the stories once submitted.

I love to write and published a column in our local paper and in The Arizona Republic newspaper. After 22 years, I called the column writing to a halt. But I loved every word, person I met to write about and the causes I was blessed to learn and wr

When I'm struggling to get my writing all together and it doesn't happen in my time frame, maybe that's writer's block. I set my work aside, do something very different, like bake bread, take the dog outside or call a friend. Then when I come back to work, I'm refreshed and often my writing is refreshed as well. I don't like to force writing, even on deadline. I let the deadline, or struggle, guide me to the finish.(less)

I'm from the old school of pen and paper so as long as I have an idea and something to write with and on, I'm good to go. But do give me a computer for the long run. The next best thing is when I'm done writing something and while I read it I get a tingle in the base of my skull - then I know it's right. Sounds nutty, right? It's what works for me. And it's usually after editing my work more times than I can remember. I like this personal struggle to write what I want to say and in the manner I had hoped to say it.(less)

Butterfly Moments Can Come at Any AgeJune 6, 2001Suburban News PublicationsThis column has been re-published in both of my books and I wanted to share it here.      I know how a butterfly must feel when it breaks out of its cocoon and spreads its wings. I must have been eight or nine years old […]
