Mary Shaw is an Irish Canadian retired teacher. Born in Dublin, Ireland she has lived for over 40 years in Canada. Here she has raised her family and has a deep passion for the Canadian ideals of equity, inclusion and peace.

Recognizing that education is the only way to fully achieve these ideals, her first book tries to do this with humor. Over the years laughter has always helped her connect with students and she applied that same principal to this book about Unkie Herb and his family.

I feel bias and prejudice are learned early or inherited and sometimes it takes a lifetime or maybe never to unlearn. I have spent 40 years unlearning. I look on my Unkie Herb series as confirmatory evidence of unlearning. So I think, teach children early and give them correct information and that is what I tried to do with Basil's Unkie Herb. Many children may be unaware that in 29 of the approx. 200 soverign states marriage equality exists. So a little boy who says he will marry his best friend Austin is ridiculed and questioned by his peers despite the fact that he was ring bearer at his two aunties wedding. Ignorance leads to meaness and confusion. So for that little boy I am trying to ensure noone has to unlearn something as simple as "here you get to marry whom you love". By writing funny anetdotes about Unkie Herb I am hoping everyone will love him and cheer when he introduces Ricardo.(less)

Consequences

Ishmael Beah says in his book "Long Way Gone" that "one of the consequences of civil war is that people stopped trusting each other and every stranger became an enemy. Thinking. Is this what is happening? Currently there seems to be a lack of trust in anyone be it government or just someone different. “But when the girls in school make me play Who Are You Going to Marry, they say I have to pick a girl,” said Basil.

“That’s true in a lot of places, but not here,” said Mom.
“So Unkie Herb doesn’t have to pick a girl?” asked Basil.
“No. He can marry whomever he loves. Mostly boys marry girls,” said Mom. “But

where we live, a boy and a boy, or a girl and a girl, can get married if they love each other.”
