Moose Mutlow has been professionally involved in education and the outdoors for more than 30 years. Moose’s first job when he left high school was as a water bailiff on a river north of Birmingham, England. He swapped those cold mornings to be a canoe instructor in the Ardeche, managed a beach concession on the Mediterranean, an Outward Bound instructor in Australia, he taught High School science in the Kalahari Desert, and been a classroom teacher, education director, elite Sport Academy Principal, and is currently the Senior Project Director for NatureBridge. He has worked in a zoo, been a bar manager, volunteered as a social worker, and was a poorly rewarded street performer on too many occasions. He has been on expeditions in Southern Africa and the Arctic. He spent a couple of weeks at the Denali Basecamp on a SAR patrol and realized he really was not that keen on mountaineering.

At some point he went to college and got an Honors Degree in Environmental Science and a Post Graduate High School Teaching Certificate in Biology and Physical Education.

Moose is a Rescue 3 Agency Instructor and has been the Senior Swift-water Instructor for Yosemite Search and Rescue for 12 years. He has been featured on NPR and regional/national news discussing water safety and accident prevention. He was the only person shown crying in the YOSAR documentary – Dangerous Season.

Moose developed and has instructed the Family Liaison Officer training in Yosemite National Park since 2010. Moose has been nationally recognized for his work as a Lead FLO and has trained the FLO’s in Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Smoky Mountain National Parks.

He spent 12 years as an Outward Bound instructor in Australia, USA and Wales. For five years Moose managed the Instructor Development Programs at North Carolina Outward Bound School. Alongside instructional development Moose has instructed Vietnam Veterans, worked with addicts in recovery, mixed ability programming, corporate executives, and adolescents. Moose graduated from the first NOLS Professional River Instructor program and trained with Rigging for Rescue in high angle rescue. After more than 2000 instructional days in the field he does not miss thrashing around in rhododendrons with a 70lb backpack in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Moose helped develop Yosemite National Parks “Red Bear, Dead Bear” program to reduce wildlife road-kill. After receiving a series of richly deserved speeding tickets in the park he conducted an 18-month informal study and presented his findings to the scientific community in the park. The presentation, entitled “Splat goes the Weasel”, helped identify the issues of concentrated road-kill locations and introduced the idea of roadside signage to encourage motorists to stick to posted speed limits. Moose has subsequently not received any more moving violations in the park.

Moose has worked in First Response, SAR and emergency services for more than two decades as a SAR technician, W-EMT, Ski Patroller and Senior Trainer.

He failed his cycling proficiency test aged 10 – it was easily the worst student experience of his life. He references that needlessly humiliating morning to this day to try and make all instructional experiences positive and supportive. He eventually passed the proficiency test aged 11.
