I was born on the Isle of Wight, grew up in the West Midlands and now live in East London. I've published two books: Smoked Meat (Flambard Press) a collection of interlinked stories set in Montreal, which was shortlisted for the 2012 Edge Hill Prize, and The Threat Level Remains Severe (Gallic Books), which is set in the House of Commons, where I have worked for many years, and was shortlisted for the Guardian's 2017 Not the Booker Prize. ...more

The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith
"Every Zadie Smith novel I've read (all of them) have been good, mostly great actually, but I think this one is the hardest to crack. The way her brain works is incredible: how she settled on a story about a Chinese-Jewish autograph connoisseur is min" Read more of this review »
The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith
"One of the single most memorable books I've ever read and totally underappreciated. It's so good. It's about a young man totally at a loss in his life and he has to do a lot of stupid things to realize he actually has it all pretty good. She chooses " Read more of this review »
The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith
"How can you possibly follow up White Teeth? Well you can't, but Smith gives us a very different but equally enjoyable novel. The plot of The Autograph Man is, shall we say, a bit more conventional than White Teeth. Smith's wonderful ability to captur" Read more of this review »

Read this to my daughter. She quite enjoyed it. It was fine, I guess, but not as good as the classics. Didn't capture the atmosphere of London. A little bit bland, I guess. ...more

Hilariously awful. It has this nauseating tone that I'm struggling to describe; snobbishly confiding is the best I can do. Like a very extended Daily Mail feature (given she's a DM columnist, this is unsurprising). I'm giving it 5 stars for readabili ...more

A quick read. Interesting back story by Trump's niece. Explains a great deal why he is as he is. Slightly repetitive though. She goes on and on about how her grandfather and Donald wronged her late father. They probably did, but I wanted more insight ...more

Enjoyed this a lot. Very Patrick Hamilton in feel (PH is one of my favourite authors). Seedy lives on the south coast in the run-up to WW2. A quick read. I love stuff set in the 30s and 40s. Not sure why.

Am halfway thru this and I prob will finish. It's very readable. If you have any vague interest in the 60s, partic London in the 60s, you'd prob find it interesting. ...more
