Polly Toynbee (born Mary Louisa Toynbee, 27 December 1946) is a British journalist and writer, and has been a columnist for The Guardian newspaper since 1998. She is a social democrat and broadly supports the Labour Party, while urging it in many areas to be more left-wing, though during the 2010 general election she urged a tactical vote in support of the Liberal Democrats in an attempt to bring about a Lab-Lib coalition in support of proportional representation. She was appointed President of the British Humanist Association in July 2007. In 2007 she was named 'Columnist of the Year' at the British Press Awards. ...more

Rachel Reeves, just tell voters why taxes must go up – and then do it | Polly Toynbee

The Thatcherite notion of tax as wicked must be challenged in the upcoming budget. Target unearned wealth; explain that tax creates a decent society

It’s late already: only six weeks to prepare the way for what’s to come. Everyone knows taxes will rise on 26 November, budget day. Speculation runs wild, often malevolently designed to frighten. Will she, won’t she break her pledge not to raise the th

“The pens sharpen – Islamophobia! No such thing. Primitive Middle Eastern religions (and most others) are much the same – Islam, Christianity and Judaism all define themselves through disgust for women's bodies.”
Polly Toynbee

“Children know. They breathe it in early, for there's no unknowing the difference between nannies, cleaners, below stairs people and the family upstairs. Children are the go-betweens, one foot in each world, and yet they know very well from the earliest age where they belong, where their destiny lies or, to put it crudely, who pays whom. From a young age their loyalties are torn, betrayal of both inevitable, colluding in complaints with gossip passing each way, upstairs and down...love that nanny, au pair, housekeeper or any paid employee - but never forever. Never equally. Tiny hands steeped young in the essence of class and caste.”
Polly Toynbee, An Uneasy Inheritance: My Family and Other Radicals

“The strain of engaging emotionally with all that misery was exhausting. The kindness and hard work of the care assistants here was worth far more than they were paid. But this is unseen, unmentionable labour, hidden away in these human oubliettes we would rather not think about [...]. It is because caring is women's work. That attitude is embedded still in the values society apportions to the jobs people do. It is why there will never be equal pay until women's work is regarded with equal respect [...]. Women's work is still treated as if it should be given almost free, a natural function.”
Polly Toynbee, Hard Work: Life in Low-Pay Britian
