I have written four books of fiction, Naked to the Waist (1991), In the Gloaming (2000), Think of England (2002) and Fellowship Point (2022). I write everyday at least for a few minutes. I also teach in the English department and the MFA program at Rutgers-Newark. I have learned so much from teaching! I'm working on a new novel, a sequel to my short story "In the Gloaming." That story was made into two films, one by HBO (it's available on Amazon Prime) and one by Trinity Playhouse. I always have a cat or a dog or both sitting near me when I work. ...more

By all rights this novel should be a classic of literature about a person's search for self and for fulfillment in all areas of life. Ina is a fascinating mix of high intelligence and lack of self-knowledge. She has led a rather constrained life of c ...more

“They hugged, pressing each other's arms, and their brief embraces buoyed them up - forbearance and grace passing back and forth between them like a piece of shared clothing, designated for use by whoever needed it most.”
Alice Elliott Dark, In the Gloaming

“Everyone who’d lost something of crucial importance wished he or she could go back to the moment when it was still theirs. The wish was so powerful it seemed it might reverse the direction of time. It bore apparitions and ghosts.”
Alice Elliott Dark, Fellowship Point

“But there was a last time. An unforeseen and uncommemorated last time. I don’t remember it. That, more than anything, describes aging to me—the letting go of one activity after the next, with no fanfare. Just realizing later that the last time has come and gone, Agnes said.”
Alice Elliott Dark, Fellowship Point

Topics Mentioning This Author

“It seems to me that I grew younger daily with each adult habit that I acquired. I had lived a lonely childhood and a boyhood straitened by war and overshadowed by bereavement; to the hard bachelordom of English adolescence, the premature dignity and authority of the school system, I had added a sad and grim strain of my own. Now, that summer term with Sebastian, it seemed as though I was being given a brief spell of what I had never known, a happy childhood, and though its toys were silk shirts and liqueurs and cigars and its naughtiness high in the catalogue of grave sins, there was something of nursery freshness about us that fell little short of the joy of innocence.”
Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited
