I’ve read a couple of Robbie Dorman books before this one, and Yours Forever is by far the most unique.

Henry feels a calling: to rescue his love’s heart that has been imprisoned in a house. What Henry doesn’t expect is this journey will take him to different worlds and dimensions. He will meet gods and endure excruciating torture. But will it be worth it?

That’s the best description I can write to sum up this book, but it’s honestly best to go in with an open mind. This book takes many twists and turns, and you as the reader are just as blind as Henry walking through door after door, not sure what to expect.

Why is this different from other Dorman books? Dorman has a fast-paced writing style and his stories are very engaging, from the first to the last page. Like a maze, Yours Forever has countless twists and turns. It starts out slow; I wasn’t completely engrossed until about page 50. Dorman’s fast-paced writing does come out toward the end, but Yours Forever has more of a poetic style, yet this descriptive writing doesn’t take away from the action. It really shows Dorman’s talent, how he can switch up his style with ease. That said, I did take off one star because it does get repetitive at times.

Even though this book is largely unpredictable, I did predict the ending. But I’m still trying to decode Dorman’s message, because Yours Forever is more than just a fun read. It starts off as a love story, but you realize it’s not as much of a romance as it is a survival book and what one is willing to do to earn the love of another. Henry’s lover, who is referred to as Beloved, was described as a lost love, but you realize she’s more of a goddess. It’s also a deep look into how we view love, the worship and limerance of another that forces us to endure struggle after struggle. Toward the end, Henry asks himself if that’s really what love is? And this is a message that we should be asking ourselves, even if we’re not stuck in an otherworldly maze.

Otherwise, I highly recommend Yours Forever if you want a highly contemplative read that takes you to another world. If you want something fun but still well-written, I suggest Dorman’s Words of Christ in Read. ...more

I found The Odd Women in my dad’s collection. I never read a George Gissing book before this, but I did study women’s literature and have pretty much read all the greats. Yet, I found myself highlighting and underlining sections—and I haven’t done that while reading since I was in college. Even my dad made notes while reading.

While The Odd Women is arguably the bleakest feminist book I’ve read, it’s one that everyone should read.

The Odd Women was written during the end of the Victorian era, when there were more women than men. This resulted in “odd women,” meaning women who never got married. Since this was a deeply patriarchal society, these odd women often lived in poverty or became slaves to addiction. We see both themes in this story.

This book follows the lives of several people, but Rhoda Nunn and Monica Madden/Widdowson are the most important. Nunn is an example of what early feminism looked like: she denounced marriage and made educating women her life’s work. We first meet Monica Madden, who worked as a shop girl and later became a student at Nunn’s school, but Monica decided to accept the marriage proposal of (the insanely obsessive) Mr. Widdowson, exchanging a life of education and work for one of comfort. But Mrs. Widdowson soon learns that this was a grave mistake.

Gissing doesn’t center on all feminist themes (such as advocating for a woman’s right to vote or hold positions of power), but The Odd Women does focus on these central themes: that marriage is the enemy of women’s liberation and patriarchy has severe flaws. While we meet a combination of independent women and spinsters in this book, the differences between Nunn’s and Widdowson’s mindsets are striking and serve as the centerpiece for this book.

There are a few men: I mentioned Mr. Widdowson, but there’s also Everard Barfoot and a gentleman named Bevis. I won’t go into detail about them, but if this is how men behaved in the Victorian era, it doesn’t seem like men changed at all.

Even though this book takes a brutal look at the difficulties women faced in the Victorian era, it gives me something I never expected: hope. Even during a time when unmarried women had zero rights, there were still those advocating for our freedoms and creating establishments that will later lead to our independence. And during a day when those in power are attempting to regress our rights, this is a reminder to always study history. ...more

Ansley is forced to do the one thing we all hate: attend a wedding. And this is her sister’s wedding. We very quickly learn that Ansley isn’t fond of her soon-to-be brother-in-law…as well as his entire side of the family. But a little more than family politics occurs at this wedding, and there are probably more blood and guts than what Ansley was expecting.

One phrase to sum up Reception is it’s one hell of a ride. You hate the moments you have to put the book down, and when you pick it back up, you want so much more. It’s almost as if you’re a cannibal who hasn’t eaten in years, and yearn for the taste of fresh (that may have foreshadowed what you can expect to read).

While I hate how it took me so long to read this book (it has been taking space on my TBR for who knows how long), I equally hate how it took me this long to read a Kenzie Jennings anything. Jennings is an amazing writer, let’s just say it as it is. She’s hilarious, but not in the cheeky yet cheesy way that many authors in the genre merge comedy and extreme horror. Jennings’ words cut like a knife, but you also can’t help but smile at her silly puns and clever jokes.

I won’t give away the ending, but I will say this—I’m great at predicting endings, but even I didn’t predict this one. While I did predict this scene, the ending was a complete 180 than I expected (though I was REALLY close, I predicted the scene before it and figured that would be the ending).

As much as I loved this book, I did take off one star. The main reason being Ansley. I had a love-hate relationship with her. She’s the perfect unreliable narrator, but not in the Alex DeLarge way where she’s evil but love being in her head. While I enjoyed her quick wit and banter, her clumsiness and stupidity made me pull out my hair numerous times. That said, I do think this was intentional. As stated, Jennings is a skilled author, and I have a feeling she created Ansley as the very imperfect heroine rather than the badass chic trope that’s been trending in the genre.

I also was warned by other reviewers about this slight flaw, but it does take a bit for the book to really START. About 50 pages in, so not too bad. But if you’re like me and really hate weddings, you’re in for a yawn-fest until there’s bloodshed (which again doesn’t happen too terribly far into the book).

Even with these two minor flaws, I highly recommend Reception if you want a fun yet brutal read! ...more
