Jacqueline J Dobor is a British author who lives in the North East of England with her husband Rob. Every spare childhood moment was spent living out her stories and adventures. Jacqui was the child who invited monsters to live in her wardrobe. She encouraged demons to skulk beneath her bed, ghosts to occupy dark corners, and witches to circle her house at night. She had firm friends, creations of her own, characters who never judged her, or abandoned her. They shared the joys and terrors of her life. They spanned her formative years and struggled with her through her teens. Today they live on in her stories.

I'd heard of these wells, or springs, with their rag trees, but had never seen one. Every branch in the woodland was adorned with offerings in the form of ribbons, bits of fabric, teddy bears, shoes, bits of police tape, photographs even, but what struck me most was the eerie silence and the deeply unsettling atmosphere of the place.

Whatever term you use to describe them, rag trees, wishing trees or pagan trees, there's no denying the effect these otherworldly shrines have on the environment they exist in and on those visiting or passing through.

Whilst writing The Pagan Tree, I drew on my experience of visiting the clootie well and hope I was able to capture the eeriness, the beauty and the sadness. (less)
