Sometimes, I think that my characters are lords or slaves before they become rebels or artists. It's like looking at a mirror. You can assume that the charcoal stains on their hands come from drawing, and you can later learn that they live in a mining town.

Typically, I start with a name, a portrait, and a quote or two about them.
If I don't even have these bones, my character development is either: "she was one of the Greek Algea" or "This is Eleanor and she's 19 and she has green eyes like absinthe and she hates coffee but she has a secret adoration for x and x". There is no in-between. (;(less)

It is painted the green of myrtle and decorated with yellow and violet flowers brushstrokes. Its head and tail hang and bobble from a contraption inside the hollow creature. Has anyone lost one?
