After a bracing walk across the hills, I'd take a break in the Prancing Pony and enjoy a spot of people-watching. Maybe there would be an enigmatic pipe-smoker in the corner...(less)

My main piece of advice would be don't put off writing until it's the right time. There's never a right time. If you get an idea, just start writing. You can worry about plotting and world-building later. A story is nothing without an idea, so get that down first. The rest will follow.(less)

It’s a Trap!

OK, OK. I missed my May the Fourth Be With You Star Wars quote tie-in by one day (as I write this, it’s May 5th) but it’s a message that’s true for indie writers, whatever the time of year.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen a huge upsurge recently in not just fake social media posts and messages from scammers, but also direct emails to my author address. These usually take the form of someone o

This one had me turning pages every spare moment I had until the ending (which I'll talk about after the spoilers warning), and went immediately into contention for my 2026 Read of the Year.

Post-apocalyptic without the tropes

Thoughtful, atmospheric, and masterfully written, this book throws you in at the deep end without any world-building. Authenticity jagged and jarring dialogue only serves to set the scene more convicingly. I'm from
